About this Collectable
The Volkswagen Spijlbus (officially the T1) is an icon that only elicits positive reactions. Everyone knows the story of the sketch by Dutch Volkswagen importer Ben Pon Senior, which now has a place in the Rijksmuseum. He sketched a van (Transporter) based on the VW Beetle, thus laying the foundation for one of the most successful vans, which is still built today. The Spijlbus or Bulli (officially the T1, abbreviated from Transporter 1 and delightfully confusing, internally called the VW Type 2 at Volkswagen because the Beetle was the Type 1) was much more than a van: it became an icon for hippies, surfers, and many other enthusiasts. VW has since launched a new version, the electric Volkswagen ID. Buzz. Fun, modern, and retro, but the ID. Buzz lacks the irresistible charm of an original T1. Volkswagen do Brasil Ltda. The T1 was first produced in 1953 using prefabricated, imported parts. From 1957 to 1975, station wagon and bus versions were produced using locally produced parts. This makes the T1 one of the longest-produced models ever.
The example offered here is a "late" Brazilian T1, so all the teething problems have been ironed out. Special features include the period-correct accessories, such as a roof rack with an original Brazilian surfboard and suitcase. The flower basket, wicker basket, and cool box are also essential. The T1 is already a cuddly little car, but the folding windshields complete the look and eliminate the need for air conditioning. With its 1500cc, it's certainly no street car, but it's still better than the original 1100cc engine that the first models came with.
Our Opinion
If you're looking for a fast construction worker's van to get from A to B at full throttle, skip this one. This T1 is perfect for unwinding with family and friends. Everyone you meet gives it a thumbs up, and thanks to its age, it can enter any low-emission zone.
