About this Collectable
Porsche 911 (997) GT3
After Porsche introduced the legendary 911 2.7 RS in 1973, things remained quiet for a long time, until a worthy successor finally arrived in 1992: the 964 RS, based on the 964 Cup car used in the Carrera Cup from early 1990. In 1995, the successor arrived quickly in the form of the 993 RS. Here, too, was a street version of the 993 Cup. When the water-cooled versions saw the light of day in 1997, things remained quiet for a while until Porsche decided to build a Cup car based on this as well. The Carrera was taken as the basis and fitted with a modified (extremely powerful) Mezger engine (yes, exactly, the air-cooled base) equipped with water cooling. Various experiences at Le Mans, among others, showed that this was the suitable engine, and the GT3 Cup was born! In 1999, a street-legal version was also produced here: the 911 (996) GT3, featuring 360 hp from the high-revving Mezger block.
The 996 GT3 was built through 2004, with the 996 GT3 RS serving as the farewell model, of which only 600 were made.
Naturally, the successful GT3 Cup was continued, and in 2006, the street-legal version was released here as well in the form of the 997 GT3 (are you still following...). Due to the positive experiences with the Mezger block, 415 hp was squeezed out of it through various modifications, allowing the engine to rev up to a staggering 8,400 rpm. Forget bore scoring, IMS bearings, and other misery; a Mezger rarely breaks down despite the many tortures. The 997 GT3 was available in several versions: as a base car with sports seats (without a rear bench), as a Clubsport (with roll cage and bucket seats), and as an RS (wider body, roll cage and bucket seats, and some extra lightweight materials). While the 996 GT3 was quite a stiff and tricky car, the 997 GT3 became somewhat more comfortable and easy to handle. More modern materials, the return of the classic front end, and once again larger brakes and wheels were a real improvement.
The GT3 offered here is not a beat-up track beast. It is the comfort version with sports seats and without a roll cage. Delivered new and maintained in Italy, after which the car was serviced by Porsche specialist Carmus in Estonia from 2014 until 2018, where a new clutch was also installed at 122,000 km. The car arrived in the Netherlands in 2019 and was registered by the current owner in 2021. In addition to the 111-point check, a service was immediately performed by Porsche Gelderland. Two years ago, The Collectables sold the GT3 to a new enthusiast, who had extensive maintenance performed on it. The invoices speak for themselves. Because the last owner preferred an automatic, he bought a 991 GT3!
Our opinion
An RS or GT3 is actually always a good choice. Little to no depreciation, pure driving pleasure, and you truly have something unique. Add to that the very solid engineering and the classic appearance, and you have a 911 that is not to be sniffed at. It is still real driving, and you really have to work to get the maximum out of it. There are few cars that provide so much experience and satisfaction to the driver. The great thing is that you can also use it to pick up sandwiches in the morning and take it to the track in the afternoon without adjusting anything (except the tire pressure, of course). With a manual gearbox, it is a dying breed, and (unfortunately) it doesn't get as pure as this anymore. This GT3 already has some experience, making it perfectly suitable for actual use rather than letting it gather dust in a corner.
About the seller
The last owner bought the GT3 2 years ago from The Collectables but prefers driving a PDK. He therefore traded in the 997 GT3 for a 991 GT3.
