After the famous Italian sports car brand DeTomaso passed to Qvale and then came into the hands of the MG Rover Group, MG presented the X80 concept at the beginning of this century. A somewhat dull and dated-looking sports car. In 2002, MG came out with an updated (and tough) version, the XPower. The XPower's design came from Peter Stevens, (also the designer of the McLaren F1). Production was complex as the bodywork was made simultaneously in England and Italy, and thanks in part to a lot of Carbon, the weight remained low. The SV drew 324 hp from the Ford Mustang's V8. The SV-R had a 5.0-litre V8 with 390 hp. Production started in Modena and final assembly in Longbridge, so in the end there was a peculiarly Italian, English co-production with partly American engineering. Furthermore, some parts were borrowed here and there; for example, the XPower has headlights and tail lights from Fiat.... Performance was great. The sprint to 100kmh went in 5 seconds and the top was over 280kmh. In 2005, MG Rover went bankrupt so only 82 were produced of which 42 were SVRs. Only 23 were delivered as left-hand drive, of which only 15 had a manual gearbox.
The one we offered came in Pearl Black with Gunsmoke Grey / Royal Black Leather, Electric seat height adjustment, electric windows, leather steering wheel and 4-point seat belts. The side vents are also painted in Gunsmoke metallic. SV-R further features 18-inch OZ alloy wheels and upgraded brakes from Brembo. This car was built (and ex-factory without the large rear spoiler) in support of the MG XPower introduction in Italy that was planned in May 2005 as a demonstration model for dealers. However, it never came to that and the SV-R was kept at MG Sport & Racing Ltd. Subsequently, the MG-R ended up in a Dutch collection and therefore drove only 160km to this day. This SV-R comes complete with registration plate.
Our opinion
It doesn't get much more exclusive than this. A car from the days when MG was still a true English brand and not powered by batteries. A unique combination of English and Italian craftsmanship without very complicated technology, making this thoroughbred not an extremely expensive boar. For the collector of unique cars or for an enthusiastic driver who appreciates a unique and fine driver's car.
