Honda S2000

The Honda S2000 AP1, introduced in 1999 to mark Honda's 50th anniversary and intended as the brand's technical calling card. The engineers were given virtually carte blanche, resulting in one of the most exceptional sports cars of its generation: a compact rear-wheel-drive roadster with perfect weight distribution, a six-speed manual transmission, and an engine that revs up to 9,000 rpm—the now-legendary 2.0-liter F20C engine. 240 hp from just 2 liters of displacement, and that without turbos or other aids, is a tremendous achievement and is currently surpassed only by the exorbitantly expensive Porsche GT3 and Ferrari V12 models. All the goodies needed for such performance are present, such as forged pistons and connecting rods, a forged crankshaft, and, of course, Honda’s VTEC system with variable camshaft height. The result is an engine that drives smoothly at low revs but comes fully to life above 6,000 rpm, revving up to 9,000 rpm like a true racing engine. Between 2000 and 2004, the F20C won the prestigious International Engine of the Year Award five years in a row. With the engine behind the front axle, a limited-slip differential on the rear axle, and a Formula 1-style double wishbone suspension, the handling is formidable. A fun fact is that the leading German automotive magazine conducted a series of tests. An S2000 was successively filled with Super Plus (98 RON), Super (95 RON), and Normal (92 RON) fuels, and the performance of each was measured on a test bench. This showed that engine performance was exactly the same for all three fuel types, down to the first decimal place. This was considered excellent proof of the design and engine control! Now in our auction is the one and only AP1 from the first series, considered by enthusiasts to be the purest version of them all, providing a truly unfiltered driving experience. While later versions placed slightly more emphasis on comfort and stability, the AP1 is known for its direct steering, sharp responses, and unfiltered driving experience. It is a car that actively involves the driver in every drive, which is precisely why it remains so highly valued by enthusiasts. Many examples have been used extensively, adapted, or modified over the past decades, or were deployed on the track and met their Waterloo there. As a result, original cars with a verifiable history are becoming increasingly difficult to find. The S2000 offered here is truly immaculate. With only one previous owner (verifiable via the included German registration document), no signs of wear can be found, the seats appear unused, and the underside and the area under the engine compartment are all like new. The (German-delivered) car was found by the current owner at a specialist in Spain. He has owned several S2000s, but this one truly takes the crown with less than 8,500 km on the odometer. Autoblog also took it for a drive!

Our opinion

The S2000 is truly a bucket list car. You simply have to own one, if only to rev it up to well over 9,000 rpm and experience the amazing driving sensation. A truly pure car: no turbos, manual transmission, rear-wheel drive with a limited slip differential, and low weight make it a rare and beautiful combination of engineering and driving pleasure. Honda is truly one of the top brands from Japan and mark our words: within the foreseeable future, it will be unaffordable, just like the NSX!

About the seller

The current owner, a petrolhead and car enthusiast, bought this S2000 more or less by chance. Simply because a car in this condition and with this mileage is not for sale anywhere. He considers it a shame to drive it and is entrusting it to a new owner who can enjoy it or add it to his collection.
