Car enthusiasts likely remember only one scene from the film "Against All Odds"—the race between a 911 SC Cabriolet and a Ferrari 308 GTS; everything else was secondary. In 1982, for the first time since the 356, Porsche developed a Cabriolet version of the 911. While a Targa model had long served as an intermediate option, a fully open-top version was still missing from the lineup. In fact, the future of the 911 was originally set to be quite different: the model was slated for discontinuation. The future product range was intended to consist exclusively of modern, water-cooled cars with front-mounted engines, such as the 924, 944, and 928. After Peter Schutz took the helm, these plans were altered, and at the 1981 Frankfurt Motor Show, Porsche unveiled a concept for a 911 Cabriolet featuring a turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive—a single model that showcased the full extent of what was possible. Starting with the 1983 model year, the Cabriolet was introduced as a third body style for the SC, alongside the Coupé and Targa. The 911 SC Cabriolet was produced for only one year before being succeeded by the 3.2-liter version in the 911 Carrera series. Due to this brief production run, original SC Cabriolets are rare; consequently, many Targa models were converted into Cabriolets—a feasible modification, as the chassis structure was already sufficiently rigid to support an open-top configuration. Coming up next week: a stunning Targa-to-Cabriolet conversion, which—while they were at it—was also fitted with a wide-body "Turbo-look" (WTL) kit.
