The 996 has aged remarkably well—especially the MK2 version, like this 4S Cabriolet. It features wide haunches, a low, sporty silhouette, a full-width rear reflector, high-quality materials, and a delightful naturally aspirated flat-six engine producing 320 hp. Introduced in 1997, the 996 series is finally receiving the appreciation it deserves. At the time, it was reviled by purists—dismissed as a "water-cooled" (or "kettle") Porsche. Now, 26 years later, it’s clear that there is absolutely nothing wrong with water cooling. Furthermore, this generation of the 911 finally places all the controls exactly where you’d expect them to be; it features a perfectly functioning air conditioning system, and—thanks to ample horsepower, a compact body, and essential safety systems—it’s a relatively modern 911 that you can really push to its limits. However, the 996’s relatively low entry price comes with a caveat: if a 911 is purchased by someone who skimps on maintenance, you could end up with a very expensive car—because, in terms of maintenance and service costs, it remains a Porsche, after all. The Carrera 4S Cabriolet is one of the rarer variants of the 996 generation, with only 5,757 units produced worldwide between 2003 and 2005. What makes the 996 Carrera 4S particularly special is its close technical kinship with the 996 Turbo; it combines a 320 hp, naturally aspirated 3.6-liter flat-six engine with the wide-body shell of the Turbo, all-wheel drive, and a significant portion of the Turbo’s chassis components and braking system. Coming up in our auction next week: a 996 4S with an exceptionally well-documented history and a great list of options. It features a 6-speed manual transmission—making the driving experience all the more enjoyable. Originally delivered in Germany and in magnificent condition.
