The Porsche 997 Turbo features two turbochargers equipped with variable turbine geometry, known as VTG. It was the first mass-produced gasoline engine to utilize this technology! This allowed for a generous 620 Nm of torque to be available at engine speeds as low as 2,000 rpm—a figure that climbs to 680 Nm at 1.2 bar of boost when combined with the Sport Chrono package. While the automatic transmission in the 996 generation somewhat dampened the driving experience, in the 997 it actually enhanced the thrill; the torque converter provided an immediate surge of power, allowing the 997 to accelerate to 100 km/h even faster than the manual version. The all-wheel-drive system was developed from the ground up to ensure optimal traction, and the car was fitted with even larger brakes—featuring 6-piston calipers—that fit perfectly within the 19-inch wheels, which in turn are wrapped in wider tires. The 997 Turbo (MK1), alongside the 997 GT3, was the final 911 to be powered by the legendary "Mezger" engine, renowned for its near-indestructible nature. Coming up in our auction next week is a stunning, originally Dutch-delivered example; it has been with its current owner for nine years, boasts a full dealer service history, and is finished in the distinctive color Schieffer Grey Metallic.
