Although many a Porsche "fan" criticized the 996 generation, that opinion is rapidly shifting. It is aging gracefully, so to speak—especially the Mk2 version, like this 4S Cabriolet. Wide hips, a low, sporty profile, a full-width rear light strip, high-quality materials, and a delightful naturally aspirated flat-six engine.
The 996 series, introduced in 1997, is finally gaining the appreciation it deserves. At the time, it was reviled by purists—dismissed as a "kettle" (due to water cooling). Twenty-six years later, it turns out there is nothing wrong with water cooling. Moreover, this generation of 911 finally places all the controls exactly where you expect them, features perfectly functioning air conditioning, and allows you to really push the car—thanks to ample horsepower, compact dimensions, and essential safety systems. However, the relatively low entry price for a 996 comes with a risk: if a 911 is bought by someone who skimps on maintenance, you could end up with a very expensive car. After all, in terms of maintenance and costs, it remains a Porsche.
Coming up for auction next week is a 996 4S on which no expense was spared. Originally delivered in Germany as a factory demo, it boasts many fine and costly options, such as the ceramic braking system, extensive leather trim, and factory-fitted GT3 wheels. It is a real beauty to behold.
