About this Collectable

Volkswagen Beetle 1200 (ICE BUG 1983)

The Volkswagen Beetle is one of the most iconic cars ever. It is one of the most successful, longest-produced and most influential models in automotive history.
The antecedents of this car are well known: a certain Adolf H. commissioned it to build a car for the people. A ‘Volks’ car, in other words. The man entrusted with this task was none other than Ferdinand Porsche which eventually resulted in the Volkswagen Type 1, better known as the Beetle. An affordable car with room for five people and an engine in the back. This was a typical four-cylinder boxer engine, initially measuring 1.1 litres. Although the Beetle predates World War II, production did not get well and truly underway until after the war. It soon became a roaring success. The Volkswagen definitely lived up to its name. In 1972, the Beetle managed to overtake the T-Ford as the best-selling car in the world. The Beetle was eventually produced until 2003 (in Mexico). That makes this model no less than 65 years in production and more than 20 million units rolled off the assembly line.

The Volkswagen Beetle we are offering here can in itself be called unique because a) it was originally delivered in the Netherlands b) it concerns the ICE BUG (in Germany the Sondermodell Eisblauer Käfer) and c) this Beetle has only had 2 owners. The first owner bought the car new from Volkswagen dealer Ackermann in Wageningen. In 2000, his daughter took over the car and drove it until 2010, after which the current owner bought the car and then put it away with all his other Beetles. All booklets are included and the car is optically and technically in good condition. The paint has a few signs of use but little rust and the interior is clean and undamaged. The bottom needs some attention, but it does not seem an insurmountable repair.

Our opinion

Almost everyone has a memory of the Beetle and everyone recognises the model. The car we offered is not a museum piece but as an ICE BUG it is special and a nice piece of history with all the documents attached. A car to just tackle (you can really get anything for it) and then enjoy driving it or add it to a collection. Despite the long standstill, the car started immediately and gives the familiar Volkswagen feeling. In addition, it is a perfectly usable classic that no longer has to pay road tax!

Equipment

The equipment of a Beetle was always sparse. So too with this one. It is ICE BUG with silver-grey metallic paint and special upholstery.

Modifications

None, this Beetle is still completely original

Remarks

The car has been tectylated on the underside to prevent rust. In addition, the car has had a Dinitrol treatment. The paintwork is generally still clean with a few small spots and signs of use. There are a few spots visible on the underside, which need some attention, but it does not seem to be too bad. Also, the last MOT was 14 years ago now, but as mentioned, the car starts, brakes and steers as it should.

Recent service history

No recent service history is available, but the original service booklet is present and filled in up to October 1990. There is also a compression ticket with the service book. That in itself looks fine, but there is no year on it when it was performed. In any case, we recommend a service on commissioning.
