About this Collectable

Triumph TR6 1969

In 1968, Triumph released the TR6. This built on the TR5 and the TR250. Features independent rear suspension, rack and pinion steering, 15-inch rims and, of course, the fine 2.5-litre, 6-cylinder in the front. The TR6 is truly a classic English driving machine, with wonderful proportions, especially the way the wheels fit into the bodywork. The fat engine completes the driving experience with fine performance and great sound. In 1968, it became clear that the styling of the TR series was lagging behind the competition and they decided to drastically change the look. Michelotti was still employed by the group but was so busy with other designs that another design agency had to be brought in. It was decided to commission the Karmann company in Germany. Not so obvious, but it turned out to be a golden opportunity. Karmann managed to re-style the car on a small budget. The basic body remained the same as well as the doors and windscreen. Changes included the bonnet, tailgate, front and rear mudguards, the nose and wider wheels. Mechanically, everything remained as with the TR 5, including the chassis. Fueled by 2 SU carburettors with a sports air filter, the 6-in-line produces 165 hp and has little trouble with the only 1100 kg light TR6.

The TR6 offered here is one of the last produced and already in the Netherlands for 23 years. Technically, everything, but everything has been done to the car in the past to make it the best driving TR6. You can't see it all, so that's why we're listing what has been done: The cylinder head and gearbox were overhauled. As everything was loose anyway, the flywheel was rotated and the clutch replaced. Furthermore, the cardan was overhauled and all suspension rubbers, ball joints, shock absorbers and springs were replaced.
A completely new stainless steel exhaust was fitted and the carburettors were also overhauled. As a result, combined with the new electronic ignition, the car runs perfectly. As the TR6 is known for its sensitivity to heat, an adjustable electric cooling fin has been fitted. Of course, the brakes all round have also been addressed. Attention has also been paid to the exterior. The bumpers have been renewed, new wheels and tyres have been fitted, some parts have been repainted (on the rust-free body) and the seat covers have been replaced.
In short, a TR6 that is technically in top condition and not a half-finished example that was dragged groaning through the MOT every year.

Our opinion

A rally classic. Lots of TR6s are used for classic rallies partly because of their high reliability (you wouldn't say so for an English car at first) and robust, relatively simple technology. Almost everything can be repaired on the road and it is also a smooth car with excellent performance. TR6s are offered in all kinds of states of repair. This is a specimen that has received exceptional attention to make it a super good driving and reliable car. Not comparable to the average ones offered in the market.

About the seller
