About this Collectable
Triumph TR6 1969
In 1968, Triumph released the TR6. This built on the TR5 and the TR250. Features independent rear suspension, rack and pinion steering, 15-inch rims and, of course, the fine 2.5-litre, 6-cylinder in the front. The TR6 is truly a classic English driving machine, with wonderful proportions, especially the way the wheels fit into the bodywork. The fat engine completes the driving experience with fine performance and great sound. In 1968, it became clear that the styling of the TR series was lagging behind the competition and they decided to drastically change the look. Michelotti was still employed by the group but was so busy with other designs that another design agency had to be brought in. It was decided to commission the Karmann company in Germany. Not so obvious, but it turned out to be a golden opportunity. Karmann managed to re-style the car on a small budget. The basic body remained the same as well as the doors and windscreen. Changes included the bonnet, tailgate, front and rear mudguards, the nose and wider wheels. Mechanically, everything remained as with the TR 5, including the chassis. Fueled by 2 SU carburettors with a sports air filter, the 6-in-line produced 165 hp and had little trouble with the TR6, which was only 1100 kg light.
The TR6 offered here is an early, neat and well-documented TR6 that has been in the Netherlands for 27 years. The large 15-inch rims look good on the corners and stand out nicely against the dark blue paint. The trunk rack completes the look. The grey fabric upholstery is comfortable and the car also comes with leather seat covers. The TR6 is otherwise completely original and in good condition. The bodywork is also free of rust, the paintwork is neat, but does have a small improvement point here and there. As far as we know, the TR6 has driven 115,272 miles and features a gearbox with overdrive.
Our opinion
A rally classic. Very many TR6s are used for classic rallies partly because of the high reliability (you wouldn't say so from an English car at first) and robust, relatively simple, technology. Almost everything can be repaired on the road and it is also a smooth car with excellent performance. TR6s are offered in all kinds of states of repair. This is not a museum piece, but a very neat solid and well-maintained car ready for the next adventure.
About the seller
The seller bought the TR6 because it is a tough car with beautiful proportions, especially the way the wheels fit into the bodywork. In addition, the TR6 has a fine engine that makes for a great driving experience. Due to changes in his fleet, the TR6 may go to a new enthusiast.
