About this Collectable
The Porsche 964 was introduced back in 1988, but the iconic lines of the original 911 remained largely intact. Meanwhile, 85% of the car had been redesigned, including power steering, ABS and a modern, adjustable suspension with coil springs. Furthermore, it is a classic that, by classic standards, is simple and easy to drive and can be used on a daily basis. This is not always the case for classics and sports cars! The bumpers were given a more modern styling and, for the sake of road holding at high speeds, the car was fitted with a retractable spoiler, something that Porsche still uses today. A new 3.6-litre engine was developed for the 964 based on the existing 3.2 Mezger engine, which still produces the authentic air-cooled boxer engine sound. It delivers 250 hp. This means that the 964 still performs excellently by today's standards, partly thanks to its four-wheel drive. It has been said that horsepower always counts double at Porsche, and the 964 is no exception. Four-wheel drive was new to Porsche and originated from its rally activities with, among others, the 959. It is a reliable concept that works unnoticed and ensures that all horsepower can be transferred to the road.
The 964 Coupe we are offering has a manual gearbox and four-wheel drive. Delivered new in the Netherlands on 31 January 1991, matching numbers, in the colour ‘Nachtblau’ metallic and with working (!) air conditioning. The car is equipped with an AST chassis, which, in combination with the 17-inch Fuchs rims, gives the car a great look and road holding. All owners have taken good care of it and the engine was overhauled at around 175,000 km. The clutch was also replaced at the same time. The car was once repainted and therefore looks like new. No rust or signs of previous damage anywhere; in short, a very fresh 964 that cannot be compared to what is currently on offer in terms of average cars.
Our opinion
A 964 is the very last Porsche with classic looks combined with more modern technology. The 964 models are known for being rock solid and let you enjoy the classic 911 sound. An unspoilt example in top condition, which has received a lot of attention and money (over 65,000 euros in the last 10 years) from the penultimate (business) owner. Fortunately, it has not (yet) been sacrificed to a (well-intentioned but usually poorly executed) Singer lookalike.
