Who doesn't know them, those smoking and crackling cardboard boxes with 4 wheels and a steering wheel? Until "die Wende" in 1989, in the former GDR you could choose between a Trabant, a Trabant or a Trabant. No less than 15 years delivery time and you knew exactly what you were getting, because since its introduction in 1964 the concept simply became outdated.... At the end of the 80s, the petrol version finally arrived and the two-stroke engine followed, which had been in service for 25 years. Not very modern technology, but just a 1.1 liter engine from a Polo was already a big step forward. Apart from that, little changed in the 601, which, according to tradition, was built from "papier maché"... Under the skin, quite a bit has changed over the years. The power supply was converted from 6V to 12V, coil springs were installed under the car instead of leaf springs and the car was given a separate braking system. In 1990, the Trabant was no longer the only means of transport available in the (now former) GDR and the residents preferred to buy a "western" car. More modern, faster and above all: it was allowed, although…….

………A last 2-stroke version of the 601 was bought by the previous and 1st owner, not because he wanted it, but because he had to..... He bought the car new from the Porsche dealer in 1992 in combination with a Porsche 911. He was only allowed to buy the 911 if he also took over a new Trabant that had been languishing in the showroom for 2 years. The Trabant was only registered in 2005 and was driven sporadically, see also the MOT certificates. From the first year, the Trabant has always been stored indoors and the kilometers driven are all correct.

Our opinion

Well, a Trabant, what is that anyway. The writer of this story once bought an “East German trade-in” in 1989. A sputtering 2-stroke with a gear lever with instructions and hardly any brakes. Nevertheless, a nice piece of history, but actually no longer drivable today. The 601 offered by us is already a lot better and more modern. Not an Autobahnbrenner, but nice for a tour. In addition, a unique piece of history with a wonderful story to go with it.

Equipment

No 3 A4 pages with option codes, just a basic car that nothing can break. The headrests could easily have been the supplied option at that time.

Maintenance history

The mileage is very low. Maintenance is not known, but given the condition of the interior it all seems to be correct

Modifications

None, this Trabant is completely original

Comments

This Trabant is in used condition. The car has hardly any signs of wear, but the welds and bottom of the doors are showing some signs of rust formation. It has not rotted through anywhere, but it does need to be treated.

Included in the sale

The sale of this Trabant includes:

•    2 keys
•    Documentation, invoices, booklets
•    Cover

About the seller

The first owner was forced to buy the Trabant if he wanted to buy a 911 from his Porsche dealer... The current owner bought the car from the first owner but does not have room for it himself. That is why he is looking for a new enthusiast via The Collectables.
