About this Collectable

Warm temperatures approaching and 270 km/h with the top down in Porsche's last air-cooled convertible, call it the perfect summer storm.

There is a reason why the Porsche 993 is loved by enthusiasts and purists worldwide. After all, we are talking about one of the finest sports cars produced in the 1990s. Besides, it is the last air-cooled iteration of the marque. Six cylinders in a 3.6 litre boxer configuration, delivering 286bhp and the potential to reach 270km/h. Combined with the possibility to fold down the roof.

Porsche did a great job of maintaining the classic 911 design with the 993, while modernities such as an aluminium chassis and multilink suspension were added. A 20 mm wider wheelbase, an improved ABS system and perforated brake discs keep all that horsepower in line.

It was clear that there had to be another convertible version, as its predecessor (the 964) was being ordered as a cabriolet in 40 per cent of its sales. In the 993, too, the canvas top is fitted with an electrical mechanism that allows this German car to fold away its roof in 20 seconds.

This Porsche 993 dates from 1995, which means that the next owner does not have to worry about the often-failing alarm system that was used from '96 onwards. The car was brought from the US to the Netherlands in 2007, but no worries, the American bumpers have been neatly replaced with European ones. Aesthetically speaking, that's a pleasant thing. Especially in the colour Midnight Blue with the light interior.

Of course, the history is present, including a Carfax report that confirms the US history and mileage.

Our opinion

Is the 993 the pinnacle of the 911 range? Many think so. The 993 is not only so popular because it is the last of the air-cooled 911s, but also because the 993 combines a classic body with modern performance and driving characteristics. The best of both worlds.

Should we pick a Tiptronic? The purist might say "manual", but as a classic convertible, this would be the better choice.

The 993 remains a beautiful 911, also in terms of proportions. With only two previous owners, an odometer reading of 82,720 km (51,400 miles) and only some light chipping damage, this is a car that we can safely refer to as 'rare'.

About the seller

The current (second) owner bought the 911 from a dealer in the States. She contacted the first owner herself because she was curious about the story behind the car and the reason for the sale. He turned out to be an enthusiast from Boston with several beauties in his garage. Despite owning it for 12 years, he only drove 26,680 miles with this one. After a long period of consideration, the 993 may go to a new owner this summer.
