A first-class cult car. With the 928, in production from model year 1978, the focus was on low weight. The doors, both front fenders, and hood were made of aluminum. The bumpers were made of plastic and integrated into the bodywork. The aluminum profiles behind the bumper could withstand a collision at speeds up to 8 km/h. The 928 featured distinctive round, electrically operated pop-up headlights. All 928 models were powered by a water-cooled V8 engine with a 90° block angle. In the first series, the engine had a displacement of 4.5 liters; from model year 1979, this increased to 4.7 liters, growing to a massive 5.4 liters in the final phase. Based on the transaxle principle, the gearbox was located at the rear axle, a revolutionary development featuring double wishbones (known as Weissachas) that acted as a form of passive rear-wheel steering. The 5.4-liter engine was fitted to the ultimate 928, the GTS, a first-class Autobahn burner. Coming to our auction this coming week: a seriously cool GTS, delivered in the Netherlands (C20), to the first owner, and naturally with a full history.
