BMW M3 3.2 4-door (e36)

The second-generation M3, commonly known by its E36 code, has long been an underdog within the M3 family. Most have since ended up as tuning objects or being tortured on a circuit.
What was forgotten, however, is that the famous S50 B32 6-in-line is hardly inferior to the infamous S54 from the E46 M3. Take the lower weight of the E36 compared to the E46 and you get the idea that the E36 M3 is at least as fast. Although the bodywork was hardly modified, the E36 M3 is a completely different car under the skin. Differential, gearbox and engine have all been modified for the power of a whopping 321 hp. The E36 is actually a perfect combination between everything you could wish for. Little to no understeer, and oversteer only when you force it. The suspension is stiff, but comfortable enough when the road surface is not too bad. Leather sports seats that are also comfortable, but also definitely hold you well.
With the arrival of the 2nd generation e36 M3, not only was the engine boosted from 3.0 to 3.2 litres. A 6-speed gearbox was also fitted immediately and the car became available as a 4-door limo for a short time. A real "understatement" car. Furthermore, for the first time it was possible to order the M3 with an SMG automatic transmission. The first series of these SMG boxes did not excel in smooth shifting and really only came into its own on the race track.

The M3 offered here features the wonderfully shifting 6-speed gearbox and was delivered in the Netherlands on 21 October 1996 to its first owner, who drove it for no less than 10 years. After several new enthusiasts pampered the car, the current owner bought it in 2019 from none other than Hofmeister, known for selling the most exclusive and in perfect condition BMWs. At the time, he described the car as the best maintained M3 in its segment and in top condition.

Our opinion

This E36 is pretty much how you want it. Manual transmission, only 151 thousand kilometres, neatly maintained including just a new clutch and connecting rod bearings replaced at 109,000km, Estoril Blue with a black leather interior and in top condition. Just try to find one like this.

About the seller

We are auctioning this E36 M3 on behalf of an enthusiast who owns several M models. His "other" E36 M3 has been driving its laps on the infamous Nordschleife for over 10 years. Fully prepared for the circuit, it is a real racer and therefore not comparable to the one offered here. Nevertheless, it shows how good and strong these cars are. In addition, he is an enthusiastic and successful participant in the international Youngtimer races in which he has achieved many successes.

He bought this blue M3 to be able to take "normal" trips for a change, but due to the hustle and bustle that comes with running his own business, it doesn't get there (he only drove 100km with it). He has therefore decided to sell the car for a future with a new enthusiast.

Notes

The current owner has driven the car only 100km after picking it up in 2019. A well-known e36 ailment is for the headliner to loosen and droop. This is also the case here. Despite the car being completely up to date in terms of maintenance, we recommend an oil change and inspection before commissioning.
