About this Collectable

Porsche 911 (997) GT3

After Porsche introduced the legendary 911 2.7 RS in 1973, things remained quiet for a long time and finally in 1992 came a worthy successor, the 964 RS based on the 964 Cup car that the Carrera Cup was driven with from early 1990. In 1995, the successor soon arrived in the form of the 993 RS. Again, a street version of the 993 Cup. When water-cooled versions saw the light of day in 1997, things remained quiet for a while until Porsche decided to build a Cup car again. The Carrera was taken as the basis and fitted with a modified (primal) Mezgerm engine (yes right the air-cooled base) equipped with water cooling. Various experiences at LeMans, among others, showed that this was the appropriate engine and the GT3 Cup was born! In 1999, a street-legal version of this was also made, the 911 (996) GT3 with 360hp from the high-revving Mezger engine.
The 996 GT3 was built until 2004, with the 996 GT3 RS of which only 600 were made as the send-off model.
Naturally, the successful GT3 Cup was continued and so, in 2006, the street-legal version came out in the form of the 997 GT3 (still to follow....). Due to the good experience with the Mezger block, 415hp was squeezed out through various modifications and the engine was allowed to rev a whopping 8400rpm. Forget Bore scoring, IMS bearings and other woes, a Mezger rarely breaks down. The 997 GT3 was available in several versions as a base car with sports seats (without rear seats), as a Clubsport (with roll cage and bucket seats) and as an RS (wider body, roll cage and bucket seats and some extra lightweight materials). Whereas the 996 GT3 was quite a stiff and crafty car, the 997 GT3 became a bit more comfortable and a bit more conversational. More modern materials, the return of the classic front end and, again, bigger brakes and wheels were real progress.

The GT3 offered here is not a jettisoned track tiger. It is the comfort version with the sports seats and no roll cage. Delivered new and serviced in Italy, after which the car was serviced in 2014 at Porsche specialist Carmus in Estonia until 2018, where the last major service also took place including new clutch at 122,000km. In 2019, the car came to the Netherlands and was registered in 2021 by the current owner where, in addition to the 111-point check, a service was immediately carried out by Porsche Gelderland. After the service, it was driven only 3,000km by its current owner.

Our opinion

An RS or GT3 is actually always good. Little to no depreciation, pure driving pleasure and you really have something special. Take the very solid technology and the classic appearance and you have an unbeatable 911. It is still real driving and you really have to work to get the most out of it. There are few cars that give so much experience and satisfaction to the driver. The best part is that you can take it out for sandwiches in the morning and hit the track in the afternoon without adjusting anything (except tyre pressure). With manual transmission a dying breed and as pure as this it (unfortunately) doesn't get anymore.

About the seller

The current owner bought the GT3 just under three years ago as a reward for himself after hard work. He bought the car together with a Porsche connoisseur in Belgium. Meanwhile, the collection has grown to include an Alfa Romeo and several Mercedes SL models and he wants to thin out his collection a bit.
