About this Collectable
MGB 1800 roadster LHD 1979
The MG is an iconic sports car produced by British car brand MG (Morris Garages). The MGA was first introduced in 1955 and remained in production until 1962. It was an important milestone for MG, as it was the first sports car to be completely designed after the company was taken over by the British Motor Corporation (BMC). The MGA's design was a radical change from its predecessor, the MG TF, with a streamlined body and a more contemporary look. The MG-B was the successor to the A in 1962 and is a welcome guest at just about all classic events and races and one of the most widely built sports cars in the world. A fun classic that actually drives quite comfortably, is technically simple even for the simple tinkerer and whose parts supply is in good order. With a self-supporting body, the ‘B’ is solidly built. We laugh about it now, but over 900kg was quite a lot for such a car in those days. With the 1.8 litre squeezing out 95bhp, you got ahead smoothly. The MGB remained in production for no less than 18 years and, thanks to several facelifts, the car got better and better.
The MGB we are offering is from 1979 and therefore one of the last series, newly registered in the USA, as far as we know from sunny California and came to the Netherlands as early as 2001. In the past, the MGB was restored and fitted with chrome bumpers. The paintwork shows some minor imperfections, but the sheet metal is tight and rust-free. This left-hand drive MGB is technically sound and drives, brakes and steers as it should. The car is fitted with various accessories, such as a Halda tripmaster (special because with metal housing), Cibia wide beams and a reading lamp, for driving rallies and trips. The fact that the MG comes from the USA used to be a downside because of the large plastic bumpers. Nowadays, the MGs uir the USA are extra appreciated because of the fact that they are generally rust free like this one which now has chrome bumpers!
Our opinion
Meanwhile, the MG brand is in Chinese hands and is very far from the classically lined sports cars of yesteryear. So here's a great opportunity to buy a piece of automotive history that you can actually do something with. Few cars offer more driving experience than an open British roadster like this one, and it is perfectly usable as a classic rally car. Moreover, it is easy to tinker with and in terms of parts supply, problem-free.
