Phaeton—named after the son of the sun god Helios—was a term originally used to describe an elegant, owner-driven carriage. Before the war, brands such as Mercedes-Benz (then simply Benz), Škoda, and Horch all featured a "Phaeton" model in their lineups. The VW Phaeton was launched in May 2002, distinguished by its luxurious interior and the "4Motion" permanent all-wheel-drive system. Furthermore, the Phaeton boasted several unique technical features: a draft-free automatic climate control system, the highest torsional rigidity of any passenger car at the time, a Bluetooth car phone, adaptive cruise control with "surround monitoring," "Side Assist" lane-change assistance, keyless entry, and much more. While these features are commonplace today, they were truly unique at the time! From the outset, Volkswagen offered a 12-cylinder petrol engine (W12), with diesel variants—including a V10—added later. The V8 version is particularly well-balanced, offering silky-smooth operation and fantastic performance. Next week, we will be auctioning a superb example, fully equipped with every available option and a comprehensive record of recent maintenance.
