About this Collectable

The 1952 Mercedes-Benz 170 S is a true example of German engineering and was the successor to the 170 V. True to Mercedes tradition, the 170 S stood for comfortable handling and reliability. Officially, the car was called the 170SB, with the B standing for petrol. There was also a diesel version in the lineup that needed an impressive 56 seconds to reach 100 km/h. The B did this almost twice as fast, as was the practice at the time.

The 170 S offered here was purchased 35 years ago from the collection of Mercedes specialist Piet Hommel in Waalwijk. It was meticulously restored at the time, regularly driven, and still in fantastic condition. Although the RDW (Netherlands Vehicle Authority) lists a registration date of June 30, 1951, this refers to the 1952 model year with steering column gearshifts (instead of floor shifting), a chain-driven camshaft, and improved heating. As far as we know, over 8,000 170SBs were made. A few of these have survived. Piet Hommel was a Mercedes-Benz service partner in Waspik and moved to a large building on the A59 in Waalwijk in 2006. His own Mercedes collection was visible to everyone behind the large glass windows. Unfortunately, operations ceased in 2011, and the perfectly restored cars were sold to enthusiasts and collectors.

Our Opinion

A Mercedes executive car—that's what you could safely call the 170SB. Although the "S-Class" was still unknown at the time, we can safely call this its predecessor, which also happened to be called the "S." A car in very neat condition, the restoration of which likely cost many times its current value. If you're looking for a thoroughly restored 170SB that's been moved regularly and hasn't broken down from sitting idle, this is your chance!

About the seller

The current owner owns several classic and modern classic cars. He bought this one from an acquaintance who had bought it from Piet Hommel's collection about 35 years ago, but who has unfortunately passed away. He regularly buys new cars, but every now and then one has to go. That's why he's decided to auction the 170SB through The Collectables.

Comments

The 170SB was previously restored and overhauled by Piet Hommel. This was a very thorough job. The car drives, brakes, and steers as it should, and the bodywork is smooth and rust-free. The fabric interior is also in very good condition.
