Land Rover Defender Santana 88 Series III 2.3D 6-seater
Land Rover Santana 88 Series III, In original condition. This Santana was also produced under license from Land Rover in Spain and is almost identical to the English version. Under the hood we find the 2.3 liter diesel engine that totally belongs to the character of the car. This Series 88 is from 1983 and is therefore allowed in any environmental zone and is now road tax free.
The car is used but certainly not worn out, no considerable rust and has a color scheme that suits the sunny south.
Santana was founded in 1955 under the name Metalúrgica de Santa Ana to build agricultural implements. Since 1956, Santana built Land Rover off-road vehicles under license, that is, with the approval of the British brand itself. Santana produced several models and was very popular with farmers and herders outside Spain.
There were hardly any competitors in the domestic market at that time, as Santana was the only producer of off-road vehicles in Spain. Competitors in the Spanish automobile sector were all licensees or joint ventures with foreign companies. The reasons for this were the high customs tariffs and import quotas during the Franco era. This made the import of foreign new cars almost impossible and the Spanish market for independently developed product lines very small. In 1958, parallel to the model change at Land Rover, the first Series II models rolled out of the factories in Linares: 88- and 109-hardtops with the two-liter gasoline and diesel engines. In 1962, exports began. The focus was on North African and Latin American countries.
In 1983 the cooperation with Land Rover ended and substantial changes were made to the existing models with the 2500 series.
Our opinion
A Land Rover Santana is the way to own a Land Rover for "normal" prices. This one has the classic looks and fiscally some great benefits. Definitely an eye-catcher that will attract a lot of attention. But also perfect for tough off-road adventures.
