About this Collectable
Citroën Méhari
Created as a lightweight recreational and commercial vehicle, the Citroën Méhari was named after the fast-running dromedary camel, the Méhari. In recent years, it developed into the ultimate cult and yuppie car for the French and Italian Riviera! It was built as a front-wheel-drive car (in the latest builds also with four-wheel drive) and has a plastic body with removable doors and a folding, stowable, (artificial) fabric convertible top. Weighing about 535 kg, the Méhari needs very little power, which it has! The 602 cc boxer engine with as much as 29 hp came from the 2CV6 and also powered the Dyane and Citroën Ami. Citroën produced 144,953 Méharis between the car's French launch in May 1968 and the end of production in 1988. There are not very many survivors because of its rust-prone chassis and intensive (often commercial) use. The Méhari is a brilliant car for all its simplicity and imperfections. You actually get very little car for your money, but all the essentials are there. A pair of seats, four wheels, a steering wheel, a minimal engine and a few things to operate everything. As usual, the beauty is in the simplicity. The air-cooled 0.6-litre twin-cylinder boxer engine comes from the 2CV (better known as the Ugly Duckling) so for the 0-100kmh sprint you'll need a calendar instead of a stopwatch, if you can get to 100kmh at all.... Who cares, that's not what a Méhari is about at all. Take off the roof and enjoy it along the boulevard in the South of France with this unique creation!
The Méhari we offer is originally Dutch. There are still some 400 of them driving around in our little country, but still much more exclusive than a 911 and still that air-cooled Boxer engine! This Méhari has been restored from A to Z in the past, recently checked by one of the better Citroën doctors and completely reconditioned. Ignition and carburettor have been recalibrated so that it is ready to drive. The colour red looks great on it and everything looks perfect. The buckles on the fasteners, the plastic hood, but also the bottom, the rims, the wooden plate on the boot lid, the upholstery, everything in (almost) new condition. A car without work!
Our opinion
Well, what to make of this. The Méhari has evolved into a Cult car first class and is no longer seen as the workhorse it was once intended to be. It is the ultimate neck turner for very different money than yet another Lambo or Ferrari, everyone likes it. In addition, very low-maintenance and cheap to run. Obviously not a daily driver, but for very pure car fun on sunny days, this is surely one of the nicest cars you can find and then also originally Dutch delivered and in perfect condition.
About the seller
The seller is a true car enthusiast and owns several sports cars. He bought the Méhari for the ‘atmosphere’ and ‘attitude’ a Méhari exudes. Unfortunately, his height is a problem for driving the car. With the front window up yet full of your face in the wind, you unfortunately don't last long. Therefore, he has decided to auction the Méhari through The Collectables.
