About this Collectable

BMW Z3 2.8 Manual

The BMW Z3 debuted in 1996 and in the James Bond film Goldeneye as a roadster with a 4 cylinder inline engine. A smooth, fun-steering car with puike handling as befits a BMW. At the end of the 1980s, BMW released its first roadster in a long time: the Z1. The previous series was the 328 and dated from the 40'r (!) years and by now an extremely expensive collector's item. The Z1 was a progressive and expensive car. Relatively few of them were sold. The Z3 had to compete with the Mazda MX5, Porsche Boxster, Mercedes SLK or the MGF. To keep the car affordable, it shopped around in its own parts warehouse, such as the rear axle from the E30 and the front suspension from the E36. Of course, the (initially 4-cylinder) engines from the E36 were also used.
In 1997, the delightful 2.8 6-cylinder engine also became available. A turbine-like and completely vibration-free run, it revs easily and gives the relatively light Z3 very good performance.
The Z3 we are offering has such a 2.8-litre 6-cylinder, instantly recognisable by the double exhaust pipe and of course by the sound as soon as you start it. This Z3, delivered in Grenoble, France, not only has the fat engine, but also a limited slip differential to bring the power to the street. Paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox, it's a joy to drive. If required, rev it up for maximum performance, or drive it lazily on torque. This 6-cylinder range is extremely reliable and can handle high mileage without any problems. To make this Z3 just a little bit sportier, it has been fitted with a KW lowering kit, H&R track extensions and a Hamann exhaust system. A new linen roof was fitted in 2021 at 230,000km and the Z3 has had major maintenance.

Our opinion

Roadsters with a 6-cylinder still give that little bit of extra experience you are looking for in an open car. Especially when the performance doesn't lie either. With manual gearbox and sperm, it is a great driver's car.

About the seller

The current owner bought the Z3 this spring on a whim. He loves cars from the BMW and Porsche brands and fell for the sporty extras the car has. As he does not expect to drive it in winter, he has decided to sell the Z3.

Notes

The car has signs of use befitting its age and mileage. The car looks good overall, the driver's seat does deserve some attention. The last major maintenance, with new oil / filters / spark plugs has taken place in 2021 at 230,000km as far as can be ascertained. The radiator was also replaced and new brake discs and pads were fitted.
