About this Collectable

BMW Z3 2.0i

The BMW Z3 debuted in 1996 and in the James Bond film Goldeneye as a roadster with a 4 cylinder inline engine. A smooth, fun-steering car with puike handling as befits a BMW. At the end of the 1980s, BMW released its first roadster in a long time: the Z1. The previous series was the 328 and dated from the 40'r (!) years and by now an extremely expensive collector's item. The Z1 was a progressive and expensive car. Relatively few of them were sold. The Z3 had to compete with the Mazda MX5, Porsche Boxster, Mercedes SLK or the MGF. To keep the car affordable, it shopped around in its own parts warehouse, such as the rear axle from the E30 and the front suspension from the E36. Of course, the (initially 4-cylinder) engines from the E36 were also used.
In 1999, the car got a facelift that included wider side panels that gave the Z3 a more mature look. The famous 6-cylinder engines also made their appearance. Known for its turbine-like and completely vibration-free running, the smallest 6-cylinder revs easily and has little trouble with the relatively light Z3. Coupled with a smooth-shifting 5-speed gearbox, it's a joy to drive.

The Z3 we offered has one of those 2-litre 6-cylinders, instantly recognisable by the double exhaust pipe and of course by the sound as soon as you start it.  Delivered new in the Netherlands by the BMW dealer and largely maintained there too. The current owner bought the car in 2010 and only drove a good 1,000km a year with it. The Z3 is finished in the classic colour combination silver grey with black leather and a styling 32 wide set of rims. In addition, the Z3 has the optional hardtop in body colour, something you rarely come across.

Our opinion

Roadsters with a 6-cylinder still give that little bit of extra experience you are looking for in an open car. As soon as you step on the gas, you can hear the in-line six roar and before you know it you have to change to the next gear. The 2.0i is certainly not the fastest Z3 but it is the most affordable with a six-cylinder and in a convertible, other things like fastest acceleration or top speed count.

About the seller

The current owner bought the Z3 from the dealer in 2010 and had plans for many fine drives. Due to his busy work schedule, he stuck to about 1,000km a year and has decided that the Z3 may now go to an enthusiast who can hopefully enjoy it a bit more.

Notes

After purchase in 2010, the car has had another service in 2011. Due to its sporadic use, no maintenance history has been accumulated over the past few years, apart from inspections and servicing the car. Furthermore, the car has some signs of use belonging to its age and mileage as can be seen on the photos. We therefore recommend a service on commissioning. The tyres still have plenty of tread but are over date. In short, the Z3 could use a little love and then again good for a lot of driving pleasure. The Z3 is delivered with a fresh MOT.
