In the early 1990s, BMW introduced a large coupé to compete against the Porsche 928 and Mercedes SECs, among others. The 850i featured a 5-liter V12 and was almost always delivered with an automatic transmission. In 1992, the M70 engine was further developed by BMW Motorsport and continued as the S70 with a massive 5.6-liter displacement. The engine was also used as the basis for the legendary McLaren F1. Equipped with a 6-speed manual gearbox, a modified suspension, and some other improvements, including active rear-wheel steering and Electronic Damper Control, the 850 CSi was launched. The new engine and manual gearbox turned the 850 into a serious sports car. Only 1,510 examples of this true driver's car with a manual gearbox and limited-slip differential left the factory. Furthermore, the 5.6-liter V12 not only delivers 381 hp but also, with 550 Nm, over 100 Nm more torque than its tame sibling. The absence of the torque converter, which introduces a certain sluggishness, also helps, resulting in a completely different driving characteristic that cannot be compared to the somewhat lethargic 850(C)i Automatic.

We recently auctioned a dark blue example, and this coming week we will once again feature a genuine 850 CSi from a BMW collector in Calypso Red in our auction.
