About this Collectable

Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet Karmann 1958

The Volkswagen Beetle is an icon that evokes instant recognition from everyone. Indeed, there are few cars with such a long history as the Beetle. Consequently, it is one of the most successful, longest-produced and most influential models in automotive history. As many as 21.5 million were produced. In Germany, over 15 million came off the assembly line, of which over 330,000 were produced as Cabriolet, still a lot, but only 2% of total production. The idea of the Beetle convertible began as a prototype before the war in 1936 as a four-seater Karmann Cabriolet. The later (from 1949) convertibles were derived from this and delivered as Karmann Cabriolet Type 15. All changes were copied directly from the closed versions in the following years.
Still, a Beetle convertible is really something special. Model year 1958, so with a left wing mirror and no less than 20% (!) more power (30hp), delivered to the Netherlands in August 1958, neatly restored and the original folding indicators (the so-called arrow indicators) just work. Most Beetles did not survive. Often (s)r(t)eden to the end and ended up at the scrapyard. Convertibles soon had enthusiast status and were hardly used in winter so there are more survivors. Few are in such good condition, as this Beetle offered by us. Paint, interior, hood, everything is very neat and tidy. Despite the little use in recent years, it is start and run. The two-tone paint gives the Beetle a great look and, thanks to the Waxoil treatment, the rust devil has stayed away.

Our opinion

This Beetle Karmann Cabriolet is a picture. Everything has been addressed and it has started running. Of course, you could buy a project that you then go all out on, because even if you are handy the material and paint costs tick up quite a bit. This one is just ready to use, to enjoy and, despite its only 30hp, is fine to drive thanks to a weight of less than 800kg! Autoblog also drove this Beetle Karmann, click here for the video
