Volkswagen Golf GTi 3-door 1989

Offered from January 1984, the Volkswagen Golf 2 GTI was the successor to the highly successful primal GTi, the Golf 1. Over the years, the GTi was slowly refined and the, sometimes sensitive, K-jetronic was replaced by a Digifant injection system in 1987. All-round disc brakes and (for the time) wide tyres in size 185-60-14 ensured high active safety and supported the sporty engine that provided excellent performance. That things could always be better was proven by the 16V, G-60 and Rally models, but as a base, the GTi still remained (and remains) a delightful driver's car.
GTi specifics were the large front spoiler, the subtle spoiler on the boot lid and the familiar red trim around the grille with twin headlights. The interior featured nice GTi bucket seats and sporty steering wheel, and of course a five-speed gearbox with shorter transmissions. In the 1988 model year, the triangular windows in the front side windows were dropped and from 1990 the Golf got a final facelift for its last 2 years of life in the form of larger (closed) bumpers.
All catalytic converter versions produced 107bhp, which was more than enough to move the just 1000kg smoothly. For those who wanted more, there were the 16V and G-60 models. 

The GTi we offer started life in October 1989 in sunny Spain and, according to specifications, delivers 112hp without a cat! Both the interior, exterior and bottom look very good and underpin the odometer reading of just 80,000km. The paint thickness is low on all parts, indicating that this is a first paint car with hardly any signs of use. The GTi is fitted with "period correct" 14-inch BBS rims! All original stickers are on the spare wheel, under the bonnet and in the doorposts. The mileage is demonstrable through a copy of the service booklet and the overall condition of the car also exudes a genuine 80,000km. Furthermore, the car comes with a certificate of authenticity. A super clean, documented and untouched GTi that has not yet fallen prey to self-proclaimed tuners, refinishers and other rebuilders.

Our opinion     

The number of GTi's in pristine condition is rare. The Golf 1 GTi has now become unaffordable and the Golf 2 GTi seems to be right behind it. Beautiful ones are hardly ever for sale or kept in a collection. The days when you could pick up a neat and documented GTi for a few thousand euros are over, but prices are still manageable. We can already see that the Golf 2 GTi is also becoming a sought-after classic.

About the seller

The seller is a collector who owns several Volkswagens. He is constantly on the lookout for special specimens which means that the collection sometimes has to be thinned out again. He therefore offers both this very neat original GTi, and also a G-60 that is special from the same period.

Notes 

The car is in excellent condition. Original 1st Paint, bottom and interior have hardly any signs of use. In the pictures, there seems to be some brown rust. Closer inspection reveals no rust at all and the brown glow is from the original wax applied at the time. We recommend a service upon purchase.
