About this Collectable

After Porsche introduced the legendary 911 2.7 RS in 1973, there was a long period of silence until a worthy successor finally arrived in 1992: the 964 RS, based on the 964 Cup car used in the Carrera Cup from the early 1990s. A successor quickly followed in 1995, the 993 RS. This was another road-going version of the 993 Cup. When the water-cooled versions saw the light of day in 1997, things went quiet for a while until Porsche decided to build a Cup car for this car again. The Carrera was used as the basis and fitted with a modified (extremely powerful) Mezger engine (yes, the air-cooled version) with a water cooling system. Various experiences at Le Mans, among other events, proved this to be the right engine, and the GT3 Cup was born! In 1999, a road-legal version was also produced: the 911 (996) GT3, boasting 360 hp from the high-revving Mezger engine.
The 996 GT3 was produced until 2004, with the 996 GT3 RS Mk2 serving as its farewell model, of which only 600 were made.
Forget bore scoring, IMS bearings, and other issues; a Mezger rarely breaks down. The 996 GT3 was available in two trim levels: a base car with sports seats or bucket seats (without a rear seat) or as a Clubsport (with a roll cage and bucket seats). The first GT3 was not for the faint-hearted and a worthy successor to the earlier RSs. It was pleasantly stiff, lacked any driving aids, and only ABS (and, of course, airbags) were provided for passive safety. Automotive journalists and racing drivers were enthusiastic, and Porsche hand-built over 1,800 examples at Porsche Motorsport. The most remarkable thing about the Mk1 is that it's the last 911 road car to be completely hand-built at Porsche Motorsport in Weissach.

The GT3 offered here is essentially a comfort model, but it came factory-fitted with leather Recaro bucket seats (now worth their weight in gold) and was later fitted with a Tequipment roll bar. The previous owner wanted to experiment more with the chassis and commissioned Intrax to install an advanced and adjustable suspension—not cheap, but pretty much the best available. A Momo (specially for Porsche) cup steering wheel was also installed to ensure the perfect driving position. As far as we know, the car has no track record, and the bodywork is still in its original paint! Quite remarkable for a GT3 that's now 26 years old. Delivered to its first owner by the factory in 1999, it was brought to the Netherlands in 2007 with 41,000 km on the clock. It has been fully dealer-maintained, with the exception of one service.

Our Opinion

A fantastic opportunity to buy the mother of all GT3s with a clear and complete dealer history. Little to no depreciation, pure driving pleasure, and you'll have something truly special. This GT3 has been fully dealer-maintained, accident-free, and the bodywork is still in its original paint. Unique! Many GT3s have been worn out or suffered significant damage, so the chances of buying a neat, honest car are slim.

About the Seller

The current owner, a true Porsche enthusiast, purchased the car in 2018 at Porsche Classic Center Gelderland. He traded in his 4S to upgrade to this modern classic, the GT3. In seven years, the car has only been driven 10,000 km. The presence of several other Porsches means the car has been used sparingly. After some deliberation, we decided to offer the car. The Collectables will help find a new owner who can fully enjoy this fantastic car.
