About this Collectable

The BMW 02 Series was produced between April 1966 and July 1977 and was only available with four-cylinder engines (engine type M10). The various engines were initially designated as 1600-2 and later as 1602, 1802, as well as 2002 and many variants thereof, such as the 2002 ti and 2002 tii. The first two digits indicated the engine displacement. The 02 Series was the forerunner of the successful 3 Series, which is still part of the BMW range today. The 2002 was a car for the sporty family man. It offered ample interior space, powerful engines (housed under a forward-opening hood), and relatively low weight. This made the 02 Series a strong competitor for the Alfa Giulia Super, among others. The first variant, the highly successful 2002, with an engine displacement of approximately 2 liters, went into production in early 1968. The 1973 facelift introduced several visual changes and technical improvements. A defining feature of the 02 series was the forward-opening hood, a feature BMW retained for a long time and only discontinued in the third-generation 3 Series.

The example offered here was delivered new in the Netherlands and restored at some point in the past. With a few minor minor issues, the car looks pristine and drives perfectly. The 2-liter engine easily handles the 1,000 kg BMW. A modern 3 Series might have a bit more horsepower, but it also weighs at least 50% more. It's actually quite remarkable that BMW was already ahead of its time back then, with features like independent suspension and a potent 2-liter engine. A 2002 still handles perfectly well in modern traffic. A Ford or Opel from that era was a completely different story.

Our Opinion

Whichever BMW from the past you choose, they always have that excellent steering feel and truly engage you. The driving position is good, the instruments are clear, the throttle response is always good, and the braking system works well. A 2002 is truly an icon and, as a precursor to the 3 Series, one of the most important models in history. The characteristic "Hofmeister kink" at the rear completes the picture. This example is ready to get in and drive, not a project that needs all the work.

About the seller

The current owner bought the car about seven years ago as a hobby car for fun drives in good weather. Unfortunately, he doesn't get around to using the car regularly anymore. Therefore, he has decided to auction the 2002 through The Collectables.
