Volkswagen Golf Gti G60 5-door

The Volkswagen Golf GTI G60 was introduced in 1990, but due to the arrival of the Golf III, it went out of production after only a year. The 160hp über-Golf GTi was fitted with a so-called G-loader that provided a lot of extra power and torque but also had a dubious reputation. In particular, rough use (read not driving properly hot and cold) was blamed on the G-loader and made revision necessary. As age progressed, most examples came into the possession of enthusiasts who mainly spent money on wheels, exhausts and the necessary plastic trimmings. Furthermore, cheap tuning of the G-loader (a smaller pulley) was a favourite option. Unfortunately, necessary maintenance became more and more of an underthought and most examples died a quiet death.
The nice thing about the Golf GTi G60 is that the base was already so good. In the standard version, the Golf GTi already had a fine suspension and braking system, so very little needed to be changed for the G60 version. Some subtle changes to the brakes and suspension were enough for rock-solid handling. The experience is huge, especially compared to the current range of new cars, where an artificial experience is created. You can hear the G-loader make its typical sound from 2000 rpm onwards and the pulling power increases nicely in a linear fashion. Of course, this is all unfiltered and you feel it in your steering wheel and pedals.
That the G60 was and is popular is shown by the fact that countless converted examples are driving around and being offered for sale. They often turn out to be the most unusual creations from converted Golf 1 Cabriolets to converted Golf 1300s with wing doors fitted with G-60 engines.
As already indicated, very few Golfs G-60 were built and even fewer have survived. The number of "real" G-60s offered is limited to 10 or so on the internet and often with odometer readings of 180,000 or more.

The G60 we offered began life in October 1990 in sunny Spain and was delivered by the dealer in Madrid in November 1990. Both the interior, exterior and bottom look very good and, together with the copy of the service booklet, substantiate the odometer reading of just 99000km. The Spanish versions were just a little nicer as standard as they were well equipped with electric windows, air conditioning and central locking. This is a rare 5-door version fitted with "period correct" 14-inch BBS rims! The car has been painted once but has never had any structural damage, as far as we can judge. The original stickers are at the spare wheel as well as under the bonnet and in the doorposts. The car comes with a certificate of authenticity. The car ended up in a collection in early 2000 and has had very few annual miles.

Our opinion

Besides the Corrado G-60 and the Polo G40, the G-loader was only delivered briefly in the Volkswagen Golf range. Partly because of this, it is very special. Then also a very fresh example with no rust or trouble and low mileage. A must have for the VW enthusiast/collector or for someone who wants to revive his childhood sentiment. Often a car is romanticised and just disappoints in real life, but this Golf G-60 just gives you the experience you should expect from a 90s icon. Remember, the 160hp only had to lug around a good 1000kg while the current GTi, while having 230hp, also weighs over 1.5x as much!
