About this Collectable
Volkswagen Golf cabriolet 1.8 Quartett
The first Golf Cabriolet was based on the Golf I platform and was followed by models based on the Golf III and Golf VI. All generations of the Golf Cabriolet were produced by Karmann in Osnabrück; it was a bestseller from the start and is now a highly sought-after classic. Although the prototype did not yet have a roll bar, the roll bar was ultimately chosen due to American safety requirements. The Golf Cabriolet was thus the first open-top car with a fixed roll bar and was contemptuously nicknamed a "strawberry basket," but manufacturers such as Opel, Ford, and Peugeot eventually followed suit. Production of the first Golf Cabriolet continued even after the Golf I was replaced by the VW Golf II in August 1983. Finally, in 1993, the curtain fell on the most fun Golf Cabriolet ever. In 1992 and 1993, only special editions were delivered, including the Quartett with all options, cool fender flares, Recaro sports seats, and wide rims. Even as late as 1994, there was demand for the Golf 1 convertible. Since stock in the Netherlands had run out, PON purchased the last 90 new Golf 1 convertibles from its colleague Dieteren in Belgium to deliver them to its Dutch customers.
The reportedly very last example delivered in the Netherlands has had only one previous owner, has a demonstrably low mileage, and is fully documented. It was purchased in 2002 by a well-known Dutch car dealer and subsequently entered a collection where it stood untouched among all the other Volkswagen icons. Up until the suspension of the registration in 2002, the Volkswagen was meticulously dealer-maintained. The Golf was delivered on May 4, 1994, by VAG dealer Herfst in Zwanenburg and subsequently serviced by A-point Badhoevedorp and Autovroon in Amsterdam. Naturally, the Quartett looks impeccable, and even after a long period of inactivity, the Golf ran like new again with just a few minor adjustments. Old-fashioned VW quality! In addition, all documentation is present, including NAP and VW certificate. The Golf has recently undergone major maintenance, including a timing belt, 4 new tires, and new cylinders for the electric soft top.
Our opinion
The Golf 1 convertible was enormously popular. Unfortunately, most fell victim to the rust spectre. Poor rust protection, intensive use, and the soft top leaking after a long time caused a rapid decline in the Golf 1 convertible stock. By far the nicest version, this Quartett, has been neatly preserved and is unique in this condition. Originally Dutch, with a complete history and low mileage, it is very rare.
About the seller
The current owner is a collector of various VAG products and has built up a fine collection. Due to a recent purchase of another Golf Cabrio, he wishes to make room, and this unique Golf Cabrio Quartett is available for sale to a new enthusiast.
