About this Collectable

Saab 900 Cabriolet

In 1986, Saab introduced the 900 Cabriolet. A classic 4-seater convertible with a fabric hood that was built until 1994, a year longer than the hatchback and sedan. From then on, GM took over it was actually a bit over for true Saab drivers anyway. Saab owes a lot to Robert Sinclair. An American who came up with and implemented many ideas for Saab. Petrol injection, 5-speed gearboxes, turbo engines, they all came from his mind. His main achievement was the Cabriolet, which was eventually produced at Valmet in Finland. Meanwhile, General Motors had come on board and they recognised that there was no money to be made with Saab. All parts were Saab-specific and with the relatively small numbers, the cars became too expensive. With that, the curtain also fell on the 900 Classic convertible. A car that, for the time, was equipped with a lot of safety and luxury with always leather upholstery, a glass rear window. Of course, Saab also became known for its powerful turbo engines, although some of these also broke down. The atmospheric 2.0 and 2.1 engines, especially as 16 valves, were hardly any slower, but had to be revved up a bit more.

The 900 Cabriolet Classic has a large fan base, but unfortunately there are also many neglected examples in circulation. The current owner bought this 900 as a project and really went out of his way to restore the car to very good condition (don't mind the mileage) with original parts. He ordered all his parts from Swedish Car Parts and used them to build the car himself. Brake discs, suspension, interior parts, engine parts, everything was replaced or addressed. The rust-free bodywork was completely newly restored/sanded and painted by the owner, a professional painter, and the fabric hood also still looks very good and works as it should. The rims have also been restored to like-new condition. Although the car has respectable mileage, you won't find them in a condition like this any time soon. In addition, this is an original Dutch example!

Our opinion

The last real Saab was, in our humble opinion, built until 1994. After that, it was basically a converted Vectra anyway. You will rarely find a 900 Cabrio in this condition, and restoring it yourself will cost many times as much. In our humble opinion, a great car with fantastic looks and also very usable.
