In 1974, Porsche released the first 911 Turbo prototype, featuring a 3-liter engine equipped with a turbocharger that produced 260 hp. At the time, only BMW—with its 2002 Turbo—was launching a similar vehicle; this was truly unique in the world of passenger cars. Turbo engines had never before been developed for road-going vehicles. Today, they are commonplace; in fact, Porsche is one of the few manufacturers that still offers a naturally aspirated engine in its GT models. Following the initial run of 3.0-liter models, the 3.3 Turbo was introduced in 1977. It delivered 300 hp and featured an intercooler, offering more gradual power delivery—avoiding the abrupt boost build-up characteristic of the early "widowmakers." Although production ended in 1989, the 930 Turbo is still regarded as one of the most iconic sports cars of all time. It could sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 5 seconds and reach a top speed of over 260 km/h—impressive figures for the late 1970s (and still impressive today). It requires real effort to drive, however: a four-speed manual gearbox (the five-speed couldn't handle the power and was only offered in the final model year) and no power steering. That is what true driving is all about! The 911 Turbo was only available with a five-speed gearbox in 1989, with a total production run of 1,581 units. Reportedly, 724 of these were delivered as Cabriolets. Coming up in our auction next week is a beautiful example with an attractive mileage.
