About this Collectable
MG-F 1.8i
MG Rover really sweated in the early 90s when Mazda launched the MX5. After all, MG was somewhat the inventor of an affordable roadster. Project Phoenix was launched, and they looked into front-wheel and rear-wheel drive variants. They ultimately opted for a mid-engine configuration with, naturally, rear-wheel drive. Hydragas suspension was fitted (a kind of simplified version of what Citroën uses on the DS), and under the hood behind the seats came the Rover K-series engine (which, incidentally, is also fitted in the Lotus Elise). In 1995, the moment finally arrived: the MG-F was shown for the first time in Geneva. The MG was praised primarily for its stiff body and go-kart-like handling. Unfortunately, most MG-Fs did not survive, due to poor maintenance and the spectre of rust.
Now in our auction is a very neat, well-maintained, and originally Dutch-delivered example with only 63,000 verifiable kilometers plus a hardtop.
The MG was delivered in 1997, and maintenance was performed by the same dealer until 2013. At the end of 2024, the second owner parted with the car, and extensive maintenance was carried out by Minorcars. During this process, the timing belt and tires were also replaced, and the car was brought back up to standard by a specialized company. The MG is still in very neat condition; you hardly find them like this anywhere anymore. The engine is still fresh, delivers its full power, and the MG drives and handles as it should. In short, a rare, well-maintained example that was originally delivered in the Netherlands and has had only 3 owners, all of whom took good care of it.
Our opinion
You hardly ever see them anymore, the MG-F, certainly not with this mileage and in this state of maintenance. It is a very sporty little car to drive, and thanks to the mid-engine, it has exceptionally good handling. Weighing just 1000kg and with 120hp, it gets off the mark well, even now. Additionally, it can be used in the autumn (in the winter, you naturally keep it in your heated garage) thanks to the included hardtop.
