The Mercedes M-Class (ML) was released in 1997. What many don't know is that Mercedes had actually already released its first SUV in 1993. The Ssang Yong Musso used MB engines and was sold as the Mercedes Musso in some markets. Under pressure from BMW, the M-Class (W163) was quickly converted into the ML, as BMW held a patent on the M (motorsport). The ML was built in the USA and was the first German-made SUV in this segment, followed by the X5, Touareg, Cayenne, and Q7. In 2005, its successor, the W164, was released, which had the same base as the R-Class. So, no more ladder-frame chassis like its predecessor. Essentially, it was also redundant because 99.9% of the vehicles were not used off-road, and Mercedes also had an excellent alternative in the form of the G-Class. The ML63 AMG also became available in 2006. While current AMG engines are all supercharged to deliver power and meet all sorts of emissions-related requirements, the engine you really want is the 6.3 V8 AMG engine, the first V8 independently designed by Mercedes-AMG. While previous AMG engines were always based on standard engines, the 6.3 V8 (actually only 6208cc) was designed as a naturally aspirated racing engine that, even in its base trim, delivered 510 hp and 630 Nm of torque. How cool is it to put such an engine in an everyday all-rounder that then delivers sports car performance? It accelerates to 100 km/h in 5 seconds and has a regulated 250 km/h.
The ML offered here is an ML63 in truly fantastic condition. Originally delivered in Switzerland, it's now over 15 years old and a VAT car. In short, as a youngtimer, it's very suitable for business use. As is well known, the Swiss are always very careful with their cars. They have to be, because the inspection requirements are strict there. It's sometimes jokingly said that even if the seat upholstery is even slightly discolored, the car will be rejected. The current owner has meticulously maintained the ML63 and fitted it with a set of 21-inch wheels with Pirelli Scorpion tires. The original set of wheels with All Weather tires is included. Furthermore, the car is fully optioned, even the headphones for the video screens in the front seats are included.
Our Opinion
They don't make AMGs like this anymore. A naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 with racing genes in an SUV. BMW once installed a 6-liter V12 racing engine in the X5, but that was a single example. Forget all the fake AMGs that are usually conspicuous by their numerous badges and usually equipped with a downsized engine; this is still a true powerhouse. A beautiful, unmolested example with a clear history and a business-justifiable business case.
About the seller
The current owner has driven several classic Mercedes cars, which he always thoroughly enjoyed. The naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 had always been a secret dream. After a long search, he found the original owner's car to fulfill his dream. He has had a lot of fun with this completely original car, and he's eager to pass it on to someone else. He wants to continue his hobby by purchasing another classic car. Therefore, this ML63 can go to a new owner.
