Ferrari 456M GTA
Until recently, the Ferrari 456 was an underrated thoroughbred in the classic specification with the V12 in the front, rear-wheel drive and 4 seats. Enthusiasts have since discovered that this Ferrari is well on its way to the classic status it deserves. The 456 GT was developed at Pininfarina. It was available in GT and (from 1996) as a GTA. So either with a six-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic developed in collaboration with FF Developments in Livonia. The automatic used in the 456 was the second and last conventional hydraulic automatic transmission with torque converter offered by Ferrari. The 5.5-liter, 65° V12 engine was derived from the Dino V6 instead of the more conventional 60° V12 used in the 412 and Daytona. It produced 442 horsepower, 4 valves per cylinder and Bosch Motronic M2.7 engine management. Ferrari claimed the 1,690 kg car had a top speed of 309 km/h, making it the second fastest production four-seat car after the Porsche 959. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h takes 5.2 seconds, and at the time of development was the most powerful regular production car ever developed by Ferrari. In 1996, the engine management system was changed.
The name 456 is derived from the fact that each cylinder displaces 456 cubic centimeters. Despite its exceptional performance, the 456 has a relatively unloaded engine that is very reliable. A further developed version of this engine was used in the 550 Maranello introduced in 1996, which became the most powerful Ferrari production car with an atmospheric engine next to the 456.
Pininfarina was responsible for the bodywork of the 456 until 1996, when production was transferred to Ferrari. The total number of bodies made by and at Pininfarina is 1,435.
The type 456M (M stands for Modificata) we auctioned was unveiled in 1998. Many changes were made to improve aerodynamics and cooling, and the interior - still with Connolly Leather - was refreshed with new seats and other conveniences (fewer gauges on the dashboard and a new Becker stereo system. The hood was the first commercial use of carbon fiber, the previous one being made of composite material. The Modificata's power remained unchanged at 442 hp with Bosch Motronic M5.2, and the ignition order of the cylinders was changed for smoother running and torque remained the same for later versions of the 456 GT.
Total production of the 456 was 3,289 units. These consisted of the
following versions.
456 GT: 1,548
456 GTA: 403
456M GT: 688
456M GTA: 650
Performance
According to specifications, the 456 GT can reach a top speed of 309 km/h (62 mph) and can accelerate from. 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.2 seconds. The GTA is said to achieve the same 0-100 reach in 5.5 seconds. The Modificata models had the same performance statistics as their respective predecessors. It was notable that almost all reputable automotive magazines with the automatic gearbox achieved the same 0-100 time as with the manual transmission and that with much less effort. The 456 we offer is equipped with this smooth-shifting automatic transmission and has the letter "M" in its name, that is, the improved version. In 1999 original Dutch delivered and always dealer and or specialist maintained. Only 3 owners enjoyed this thoroughbred. It is a neat untouched copy in a beautiful color scheme. The typical ailment of many cars from this era, the plasticizers in the knobs, has been remedied by the current owner.
Our opinion
Surely a 456 like this is a bucket list car. A Ferrari without too much attitude, a robust engine robust engine and in a classic configuration a picture to see and (without excessive noise) to hear. excessive noise) to hear. The automatic transmission fits perfectly with the GT character of this beautiful 4 persons coupe with which effortlessly long distances can be bridged to a beautiful warm country.
