BMW M340d X-drive AC Schnitzer
A diesel that is faster than the current BMW M3 Touring. Almost unimaginable, but drive it to southern Germany at night once and you'll see that you just arrive earlier. At most, one fuel stop every 1000km instead of 2 or 3 with the petrol brother and you'll understand that you'll never close those precious tank minutes. On top of that, the performance of this behemoth is hardly inferior to an M3 thanks to its torque of 760NM. This economical Autobahnbrenner has actually fallen into the doldrums a bit because diesel engines were suddenly ‘not done’ even though they are just about the most efficient and cleanest engines you can drive right now. BMW's G21 series came to market in 2019 with, unfortunately, almost only 4-cylinders. Where you used to have a 6-pitter if you ordered a 320i, these days you have to buy a 340, which as a B58 petrol or B57 diesel are turbocharged and deliver more than enough power for almost M3 performance. A 340d is already no stunner, but thanks to the tune from home tuner AC Schnitzer (what Abt is to VW, AC Schnitzer is to BMW), it's just a little bit quicker and, you won't believe it, more economical too. The power is safe, nicely within tolerances and also fitted neatly at the BMW dealer.
The M340d X-drive High Executive AC Schnitzer (quite a mouthful) offered by us in the colour Portimao blue came to the Netherlands a year after its first registration in Germany. Almost impossible to find in the Netherlands because of the BPM penalty levied on such a new car, but fortunately still available in neighbouring countries. Most of them have considerable mileage (which is what you buy a car like this for), but the one offered here has just been run in with over 65,000km. The 340d has all the options and, as indicated, is flavoured with the AC Schnitzer package for just that little bit extra. If you are looking for a sporty, yet comfortable Autobahnexpres that is also economical and quite distinct among all the 320e and 330e models driving around, then this is your car.
Our opinion
Secretly, we all dream of an M3 Touring in the garage. Fast, practical but expensive to buy and a high mileage cost. Even used, they are still quite pricey, so why not shift your search to a more responsible version that is actually barely slower in daily traffic, but has a much friendlier mileage cost! In our opinion, everything about this car really adds up. Are you going on winter sports with your family or want to sportily tackle a mountain pass, it's all possible with this M340d. A true all-rounder!
