About this Collectable

Porsche Boxster Spyder (987.2)

The Porsche Boxster 987 Spyder is the spartan lightweight version of the Boxster and, with a slightly more powerful engine, lower weight and modified chassis, a real driver's car. The Boxster was first introduced in 1996 as an affordable entry-level model for the brand. It was meant to continue the tradition of the legendary Porsche 550 Spyder. At the end of 2009, the second generation of the Boxster, known as the Porsche Boxster 987, got a special and limited edition variant called the ‘Spyder’ and actually followed very closely the original concept of the study model from the early 1990s. The lightweight design, using lightweight materials such as aluminium, carbon fibre, lightweight bucket seats and a ‘notverdeck’ ensured excellent performance and great handling. In addition, the exterior was updated with a lower windscreen, special side panels and a fixed spoiler. The interior of the Spyder focused on providing a pure driving experience, without unnecessary frills. For instance, the doors have a cord to open instead of a (heavier) lever. The roof is just a kind of tent that cannot withstand high speeds. Porsche recommends not driving above 200 km/h with the roof closed to avoid distortion. Stopping quickly and closing the roof is not quite in the cards. It takes some practice before you open or close the roof within 3 minutes but you become more adept at it naturally and you stay dry when you keep driving faster than 90 kmh. Exactly 1944 were produced of which almost half are driving around in the USA making it a very rare car. Most Spyders were delivered in white and with a PDK, after which black (estimated around 25%) red and silver were the most common colours delivered. Only a handful were delivered in the colour cream white.

The Spyder offered here is one in such a special colour. In addition, it comes with a manual transmission. A must to emphasise the pure character of this true driver's car and also perfectly shifting to get you completely involved in real driving. Furthermore, this Spyder is equipped with the folding carbon bucket seats also found in a GT3 RS. Not only worth their weight in gold, but also much lighter than the so-called comfort seats that actually negate the Spyder's character. Getting in may be a little less easy, but once seated, the seat's length adjustment is enough for a perfect seating position, even for 1,000km trips. The Spyder came with basically nothing as standard.... At no cost, as with the GT3s, you could order air conditioning and radio for just that little bit of extra comfort. Like this Spyder, almost all Spyders were equipped with them. This Spyder was delivered new by Porsche Gelderland and drove its first kilometres on German registration plates after which the car was registered in the Netherlands a few months later. The current owner bought the Spyder about 1.5 years ago and did something with it that hardly anyone does with such a car: drive it! Some 30,000km he enjoyed this beautiful bolide! Despite the more intensive use over the past year, the car looks great and there is no wear or damage visible apart from some normal minor signs of use.

Our opinion

A little GT3 convertible, that's the best way to describe the 987 Spyder. It steers, pulls and sounds fantastic and even on the track this Spyder stands its ground. Enjoyment with a big G without really compromising. The seats are great, the owner-placed Sport Design steering wheel is super in the hand and the experience is enormous. The colour looks even better in real life and makes this Spyder extra special!

About the seller

The owner is a true enthusiast. With his cars, he always collects everything that can be found about the particular model to make it as complete as possible. After having driven a 997 Carrera 4S for 2 years ( you won't believe it, but in the same colour cream white) he was overtaken in Germany by a 987 Spyder. He didn't know the model at the time but instantly fell in love. To him, it looked like the modern version of the Porsche 356. He personally thinks it is the most beautiful Spyder because it is the purest in execution, (lack of) luxury and handling. Perhaps not the most practical but he gladly took that for granted. It had to be a manual version with the carbon seats but air conditioning and radio. So that's what this one is. He himself added the Porsche Alcantara Sportlenkrad, which he previously also had in his 997. The most beautiful steering wheel ever made! He drove the car very regularly for almost two years with enormous pleasure but, however, began to realise more and more how special this car is (one of the few Porsches still increasing in value at the moment) and thinks it would be a shame to put many more miles on it. There is a fist-thick logbook with the car containing the entire history, every receipt and photos from the early years until now. Due to its low weight and centre of gravity, the Boxster Spyder has the best handling of any Porsches of the era and is the last generation where the handling is still completely analogue. A totally trouble-free car that he will definitely miss, but the family situation (unfortunately) requires wise decisions.
