The Porsche 997 Turbo succeeded the first water-cooled 996 Turbo. A notable feature was that this 997 Turbo utilized two turbochargers with variable turbine geometry (VTG). It was the first mass-produced gasoline engine to feature this technology! This ensured that the generous torque—620 Nm at 1.0 bar of boost—was available as early as 2,000 rpm; with the Sport Chrono package, this figure rose to 680 Nm at 1.2 bar. While the automatic transmission in the 996 somewhat dampened the driving experience, in the 997 it actually heightened the thrill. Thanks to the torque converter, abundant torque was instantly available, allowing the 997 to sprint to 100 km/h faster than the manual version. The all-wheel-drive system was completely redesigned for optimal traction, and even larger brakes with 6-piston calipers were fitted to fit precisely within the 19-inch wheels, which were shod with wider tires. Along with the 997 GT3, the 997 Turbo (Mk1) was the last 911 to be equipped with the Mezger engine, renowned for its bulletproof reliability. Some tuners extract staggering power outputs from it without major modifications, yet the engine remains robust. Coming up for auction with us next week is a 997 Turbo originally delivered in the Netherlands (country code C20); it has been owned by the same female enthusiast—its third owner—for 14 years.
