About this Collectable

Porsche 911 (996) GT3 MK1

After Porsche introduced the legendary 911 2.7 RS in 1973, things remained quiet for a long time and finally in 1992 came a worthy successor, the 964 RS based on the 964 Cup car that the Carrera Cup was driven with from early 1990. In 1995, the successor soon arrived in the form of the 993 RS. Again, a street version of the 993 Cup. When water-cooled versions saw the light of day in 1997, things remained quiet for a while until Porsche decided to build a Cup car again. The Carrera was taken as the basis and fitted with a modified (primal) Mezger engine (yes right the air-cooled base) equipped with water cooling. Various experiences at LeMans, among others, showed that this was the appropriate engine and the GT3 Cup was born! In 1999, a street-legal version of this was also made, the 911 (996) GT3 with 360hp from the high-revving Mezger engine.
The 996 GT3 was built until 2004 with the 996 GT3 RS MK2 of which only 600 were made as the swing-out model.
Forget Bore scoring, IMS bearings and other troubles, a Mezger rarely breaks down. The 996 GT3 was available in 2 versions as a base car with sports or bucket seats (without rear seats) or as a Clubsport (with roll cage and bucket seats). The first GT3 was not a car for wimps and a worthy successor to the earlier RS’s.
Nice and rigid, no aids and only ABS (and airbags, of course) were present for passive safety. Auto journalists and drivers were enthusiastic and Porsche hand-built over 1800 examples at Porsche motorsport.

The GT3 offered here is basically a comfort version, with the first owner treating himself to the original fireproof bucket seat (Recaro and now worth its weight in gold) and a Tequipment Roll Bar. He occasionally drove it around the track and sold the damage-free car in 2012 to its current German owner, a university professor of Fahrzeugtechnik. His first lap (and immediately last....) was on the Nordschleife where he damaged the front bumper and, due to unfortunate coincidences, also damaged the engine. Since the Raeder brothers (now both co-owners of Manthey where Porsche is again major shareholder) had graduated from university with him, it was of course a no brainer where the car would be perfectly restored. Photos and invoices are of course showable on request. After this adventure, the GT3 was barely used.

Our opinion

A great opportunity to buy the mother of GT3s with a clear history. Little to no depreciation, pure driving pleasure and you really have something special. This GT3 is technically completely fresh and has been optimally aligned by Manthey for optimum driving pleasure. Many GT3s have been worn out or had heavy damage, so the chance of buying neat honest car is not so high.

About the seller

The current owner/enthusiast bought the GT3 12 years ago to further expand his collection (including a BMW E30 M3). The GT3 was well maintained by his team, but he hardly ever drove it. In total, he used the car for 7,000km in the past 12 years which made him decide to auction the car through The Collectables.

Notes

The 996 GT3 is in very clean condition. As indicated, the car once had minor frontbumper damage where the also the boot lid was painted due to stone chips. Headlights, side screens and boot lid are still original! The engine was completely rebuilt by Manthey 7,000km ago. Bill of just under 30,000.- Euros available for inspection. German appraisal report of 2022 gives a value of 100,000.- euro as replacement value
