About this Collectable

For as long as it lasts, the 996 generation is the most 911 for your money.
Introduced in 1997, the 996 range is finally starting to get the appreciation it deserves and it turns out there is nothing wrong with water-cooled. Moreover, in this generation 911, all the switches are in the right place, you have good air conditioning and even more compact bodywork compared to the current model range. Perhaps most importantly, a 996 is still affordable compared to a 964 or 993 and drives much better! Right from the start, Porsche also supplied the Carrera with 4-wheel drive, which was particularly useful in the Alpine countries.

This 996 of the 1st series, started life in Switzerland and was delivered to its 1st owner by Porsche Zurich on 19 August 1999. Until the end of 2018 (and 224,556km), the Porsche has been serviced by Swiss Porsche dealers. Special, because usually specialists or other workshops are chosen for maintenance from 100,000km onwards. Swiss Gründlichkeit shall we say, and Swiss people are extremely meticulous about their cars, partly because of strict legislation. As the current owner (and lover since childhood) was regularly in Switzerland and saw this boyhood dream, he immediately took the decision to bring this 996 to the Netherlands in 2019. No side noises or oil consumption and a service history that says ‘you’. He simply drove the car over the road to the Netherlands without any problems and pampered the car in his own workshop with annual maintenance. Also, the gearbox was changed, the ignition renewed and fresh oil every year despite only being driven sporadically.

Our opinion

A 996 is a full-fledged 911 and is now appreciated as such. Literally, as prices for decent ones are also rising. And with virtually no depreciation and daily usability, this is the ideal Youngtimer. This one also has four-wheel drive, so in winter just keep on driving and go to winter sports with a couple of carriers on the roof if you wanted to.

Notes

This Porsche is still in very good condition and has always been perfectly maintained by the official Swiss Porsche dealer and by the owner himself who owns a garage business. The air conditioning needs to be checked, the indicator switch does not come back on its own and the remote control does not work, but the central locking works just on the key! The Carrera's ‘nose’ and rear bumper have been painted once due to stone chips and apart from a few minor signs of use, the car is in very good condition for age and mileage. The car has always been driven nicely warm and never used for short drives by the current owner. Furthermore, no IMS problems and engine code M96.02 so with electronic throttle body.

About the seller

The seller grew up with a father who always owned classic 911s. As an HTS Automotive student and owner of ASR Automotive, he could be found weekly in Switzerland buying quality Volvo cars. The goal was to also own a Porsche 911 one day and there was that moment in 2019. The best country to buy such a car is Switzerland he knew from experience. Thanks in part to strict legislation, maintenance is always carried out perfectly. When picking up the Carrera, he got a complete and extensive lunch and full tank of euro 98 according to Swiss standards. And then driving it to the Netherlands was a bit different from a Volvo. In five years, he drove it about 8000km, of which in recent years less than a thousand kilometres. The minimal use and a change in private situation made him decide that the Carrera may go to the next true enthusiast via The Collectables.
