From 2005, Saleen became a full-fledged automobile manufacturer—a transition clearly reflected in the body design by Phil Frank for the S-281 and the other models offered by the company. While the car was previously referred to as a "Saleen Mustang," Saleen adopted a new naming convention based on the engine's displacement in cubic inches, designating it the "Saleen S-281." Between its initial launch in 1996 and 2009, the S-281 was released in various iterations. The Saleen 281 debuted in 1996, powered by a naturally aspirated 4.6-liter V8 engine (2 valves per cylinder, SOHC) producing 220 hp (164 kW). This model also featured suspension upgrades and aerodynamic body components. Based on the 4.6-liter Mustang GT, the S-281 evolved into Saleen’s flagship model. With the introduction of the "New Edge" Mustang in 1999, output increased to 285 hp (213 kW) thanks to several engine enhancements. Upon the arrival of the fifth-generation Ford Mustang, the designation was updated to "S281-3V," reflecting the shift to a three-valve-per-cylinder configuration. Next week, we will be auctioning one of these Saleens—featuring a three-valve-per-cylinder engine and an impressive 335 naturally aspirated horsepower!
