About this Collectable

In 2000, BMW built the best naturally aspirated straight-six ever. Thanks to VANOS camshaft control, the S54 boasts plenty of torque even at low revs and revs effortlessly up to 8,000 rpm. A textbook sports engine that, with proper use and (preventative) maintenance, is incredibly strong. Compared to the E36 M3, the E46 M3 gained a bit more exterior muscle, such as four exhaust pipes, a wider body, and various other details. The E46 is actually a perfect combination of everything you could want. Little to no understeer, and oversteer only occurs when you force it. The suspension is firm, but comfortable enough on a road surface that isn't too rough. Many E46 M3s have already been converted into track-day weapons, and for good reason, because they are simply extremely reliable as race cars.

Fortunately, there are still neat E46 M3s that are still driving, like the one offered here. Delivered in Belgium and then taken to Tokyo by a Japanese driver. After 21 years, the car was loaned back to Europe and ended up with the current owner, who has invested considerably in it. For example, the robotized gearbox was converted to a manual version, as all purists naturally desire. No tinkering, but professionally done by a specialist. Furthermore, the connecting rod bearings were immediately replaced, the VANOS replaced with a new one, and the rear chassis was inspected for cracks. In short, all the flaws of the E46 M3 have been addressed and assessed, resulting in a very pleasant driver.

Our opinion

An E46 just the way you want it! All flaws have been addressed and/or checked, and the conversion to a manual transmission makes it just that little bit more desirable. Lots of nice options, extensive documentation (quite remarkable for a car that has driven in Japan), and excellent maintenance. A few minor cosmetic issues you might have some concerns about, but as a driver's car, it's a fantastic example, and they're getting cheaper than ever! It also has a favorable year of manufacture (January 15, 2002) for the new Youngtimer tax scheme starting in 2027.

About the seller

This E46 is in good condition. A significant amount of money has been invested in the technology to make it a super reliable M3. Furthermore, the car has the usual signs of wear and tear consistent with its age and mileage. All work is well documented and recorded on a USB stick.
