Alpina is officially a brand, but it started out as a simple tuner of BMWs with the BMW 1500 in the sixties. Alpina always goes a little further than a “normal” tuner and has become a genuine car manufacturer with its own chassis numbers. The B4 Grand Coupe was introduced in early 2022 and is based on the BMW 440iX Grand Coupé, receiving a modified G80 M4 engine with 495 hp and no less than 730 Nm of torque. The ZF automatic transmission ensures flawless acceleration of 3.7 seconds to 100 km/h. The Alpinas are, of course, recognizable by the famous stripes and the 20-inch Alpina wheels. Truly everything has been scrutinized and improved by Alpina, matching or even surpassing the performance of the M models with better comfort, as the chassis is also just slightly different from that of a standard BMW or an M model. It is noteworthy that Alpina was recently acquired by BMW, meaning the “real” Alpinas are no longer being produced.

The example offered here is a very special Alpina B4 Grand Coupé with 1 previous owner, of which fewer than 10 examples are driving around in the Netherlands. BMW M did not venture into the BMW Gran Coupé, as only the M4 Coupé and M4 Cabrio were available in the 4 Series, so the top version of the 4 Series Gran Coupé never materialized. The Alpina B4 Gran Coupé can be recognized by its modified front bumper with Alpina lettering below the grille, subtle side skirts, a diffuser with four (Akrapovic) exhausts located under the rear bumper, and a modest spoiler lip on the trunk lid. Naturally, characteristic Alpina multi-spoke rims with 20-inch low-profile tires are fitted, and as the icing on the cake, the Alpina stripes. The interior features beautiful quality Individual Full Leather in Ivory White. Alpina incorporates a great deal of exclusive leather in the interior, but otherwise, modifications are limited to an Alpina logo on the steering wheel and a digital dashboard with Alpina features. On the center console sits a plaque bearing the production number 35 of this specific car. It is estimated that only 500-600 GranCoupés were made, of which 10 are driving around in the Netherlands.

Our opinion

ALPINAs are cars for true connoisseurs; the layman sees a well-dressed BMW, the connoisseur knows that it is something very special. An Alpina is understatedly chic, very fast, yet offers just that little bit more comfort than BMW's M models. Not that an Alpina is a bargain, but as a 4-year-old used car, it is considerably more affordable and much more exclusive. Particularly practical thanks to the large tailgate, understated, and very fast when needed. Furthermore, it is a model that was not delivered as an “M,” making it extra special.
