About this Collectable

The first Cayman was already a very well-balanced sports car, and with the 981, Porsche further improved this formula. The 981 had a slightly more modern styling and featured the modern interior derived from the Porsche 991. Moreover, unlike its successor, it still featured the magnificent flat-six engine, making it the pinnacle of the Cayman's history. The 981's chassis was 40% stiffer yet slightly lighter. Thanks to its mid-engine concept, it actually drives better than the 911. Furthermore, the exterior dimensions are reminiscent of relatively compact Porsches like the 993 and 996, as the 991 is already a very large car! Although the rear seat (rarely, if ever, used in the 911) is missing, there's a surprisingly large amount of luggage space both under the hood and behind the engine. The Cayman 981 was available in the base version with the 2.7-liter flat-six, as an S with the 3.4-liter engine, and as a (very expensive) GT4 with a 3.8-liter engine. Later, the GTS also became available with the 3.4-liter engine, which offered only 10 hp more.

This specific "S" example was delivered to its first owner in Stuttgart, after which the Cayman came to the Netherlands a year later. It's a very sporty version with features including PDK, Sport Chrono, Sport exhaust, Sport suspension, Limited Slip Differential, 20-inch Carrera rims, Ceramic brakes, and the GT3 Carbon bucket seats, which are worth their weight in gold. Furthermore, it's in very neat and excellent condition. The current owner bought the car two and a half years ago and drove it daily. Not a bad thing, to say the least. The car was maintained by the Porsche dealer until its penultimate service and had its last service at the Cayman and 944 specialist RFF. Aside from a small restyled dent, the Cayman still looks pristine, and the tires were also very recently replaced. A more complete Cayman 981 S is hard to find, and in this sporty version, it's an excellent alternative to a (much) more expensive GT4.

Our Opinion

The Cayman is actually one of the most fun Porsches available today. Affordable, manageable size, and unsurpassed as a driver's car. You won't find such a complete and sporty version as this anywhere else, unless you're looking in the GT4 segment. The bucket seats may seem spartan, but they're incredibly comfortable and offer impressive performance even on a drive of more than 1,000 km. Used examples of these seats sell for almost the original price!

About the Seller

The current owner found the car in 2023 at Porsche Centrum Twente. Porsche had always been his dream car, and after taking this one for a spin, he was instantly sold. He's always treated it with care, but after a good two years of daily driving, he's looking for something new. That's why he wants to part with it and has decided to sell the Cayman S through The Collectables.

Comments

The Cayman is in very good condition. The tires were recently replaced, and the last service was performed 3,000 km ago. Normal signs of wear and tear due to age and mileage, and a small restyled dent as shown in the photo, are visible, but overall a very fresh Cayman.
