About this Collectable

The 928 featured distinctive round, electrically operated pop-up headlights and was powered by a water-cooled V8 engine with a 90° block angle. In this first series, the engine had a displacement of 4.5 liters, later growing to a massive 5.4 liters. Based on the transaxle principle, the gearbox was located at the rear axle, which was a revolutionary development featuring double wishbones (known as Weissachas, *Winkel Einstellende, Selbststabilisierende Ausgleichs-Charakteristik*) that acted as a kind of passive rear-wheel steering. In this first base version, the 928 had 240 hp under the hood. Modest by today's standards, but at the time well above what Porsche had to offer (except for the 911 Turbo). Constructed entirely from an aluminum-silicon alloy with 2 overhead camshafts, it was a textbook engine! The 928 was supposed to become "the" successor to the 911, but by now we all know how things turned out.... The 928 was and is known as a great touring car for cruising through Europe at high speed. They are reliable, suffer little from rust, are fast, and have superb handling, as you would expect from a true Porsche. In 1987, the Porsche 928 S4 was launched as the successor to the 928 S, featuring improved technology such as a 5-liter displacement, 32 valves, and 320 hp. Furthermore, it featured a new 4-speed automatic transmission and various cosmetic modifications, such as a newly designed front end with a modified front spoiler and a rear end with different taillights and a modified spoiler. The 928 S4 performed better than its predecessors. It accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds and continued on to 270 km/h. From 1990 onwards, an electronically controlled limited-slip differential (Porsche Limited-Slip Differential, PLSD) was fitted as standard, with a locking effect of 0 to 100 percent and the GT's dual exhaust system.

We are now offering one of the last S4s produced in this auction, complete with a binder full of history and the service booklet. From 1989, the S4 was only supplied with an automatic transmission, and the GT was the sporty variant that was later succeeded by the (by now extremely expensive) GTS. At that time, you could hardly wish for a finer touring car. In fact, it is still a superb car for driving comfortably and quickly from A to B, and is also a great driver's car thanks to the standard limited-slip differential. The exhaust system is probably not original, but it sounds fantastic without being irritating. It is quite remarkable that the first owner specifically chose the "no airbags" option. As a result, the interior looks a lot more harmonious with the classic Porsche steering wheel! The white color suits it perfectly, and the “Gullideckel” rims are fitted with virtually new tires with a recent DOT code. The leather interior still looks neat and well-maintained, and the previous owner installed an oil temperature gauge as a precaution, so that the throttle can only be opened once the oil is truly up to temperature. Incidentally, with proper use and maintenance, 928 engines are good for 500,000 km or more.

Our opinion

The 928 is an icon that is slowly but surely gaining more and more appreciation. A GT that is on par with a Ferrari from that era. By far the majority of 928s were delivered with an automatic transmission. An excellent choice, as it fits the “GT” character of the 928 very well. The S4 with the 320 hp 32-valve engine is rock-solid and makes the car very fast even today.

About the seller

The seller is a true car enthusiast and crazy about 8-cylinders. He bought the 928 about 3 years ago because of its neat condition and was looking for a car he could actually use. He buys something new with some regularity, meaning the 928 is ready for a new owner.
