The 928 was originally intended to replace the 911. Nearly 50 years later, the 911 is still here, so clearly things turned out differently. However, the fact that the 928 never had a direct successor only makes the model more special. One reason the 928 is unique is that it is the only Porsche sports car to ever feature a front-mounted V8. In fact, until the arrival of the 918 Spyder in 2013, it was the only Porsche sports car with a V8 at all. The eight-cylinder engine initially produced 240 hp, but there was certainly room for improvement. Consequently, in 1979, the V8 was bored out to 4.7 liters, boosting output to 300 hp. The 928 is increasingly being appreciated today, and the car certainly made an impression back in 1978; that year, it took home the prestigious European Car of the Year title. It was a unique achievement—the first and only time a sports car has won this award. The 928’s distinctive design is timeless, save perhaps for its unique pop-up headlights.
