Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet (997)
Toward the end of 2008, the time had come, this Arctic silver 997 Turbo Cabriolet rolled off the assembly line.
All compliments to whoever assembled it. From the stunning silver metallic paint to the black leather interior with the appropriate adaptive sports seats. But the thing that sets this Turbo apart: it's a manual (!).
In late 2008, Porsche released the facelift model of the 997, the 997.2. This second generation had as its main change a completely revised engine equipped with a direct injection system, a more modern infotainment system and different taillights. One of the top models from the 997 generation was the Turbo. With an output of 500 hp and 650 Nm, this was also the only convertible at the time that reached 310 km/h.
The manual transmission (which may be considered a rarity) combined with the 3.8-liter six-cylinder boxer engine with two VTG turbos, impressive power figures are achieved. To the chagrin of many, the "old" 3.6-liter Mezger turbocharged engine was delivered only very briefly in the facelift model. Hans Mezger was "the" engine builder at Porsche and built his Turbo engine for the 24h of Lemans. A trouble-free engine that could cover long distances with enormous power without problems. The Mezger engine was available in the Turbo and GT3 models until the 997 and is known worldwide for its reliability and tuning possibilities. Because of emission requirements, the Mezger engine was replaced by the direct-injected 3.8 liter.
This example is the facelift with, very special, still the indestructible 3.6 liter Mezger engine. Slightly less HP than the successor but several tuners get up to 2000 HP out of it. Fairly unique, as only a handful of facelift models were built with this iconic engine. The car recently underwent a precautionary gearbox overhaul along with the necessary upgrades. The engine was tackled by RS Tuning in Germany where a mild tune was applied giving the engine a power output of 580hp and 730 Nm. In addition, the suspension was lowered, a short-shifter was fitted and a heavier clutch was used, making driving this car an extraordinary experience.
The standard rims have been swapped for 997 GT2 rims. New Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires were put on them about 7,000 km ago. This was done not only for cosmetic reasons, but also to keep the violence on the road.
The tough rims, black ''Turbo'' decals but also the black stone chip decals with carbon pattern, make it a beating and sporty whole.
Of course it is possible to remove the stickers, apply transparent stone chips stickers and mount original Turbo rims again. This makes the Porsche a bit fancier for those who prefer it.
The original parts were also kept to make the shortshifter standard again. The same can of course be done with the engine power.
Our Opinion
A 997 Turbo is already a joy to drive. But especially the manual transmission combined with the iconic and indestructible Mezger engine in the 997-2 body makes it a unique and true driver's car perfect for a sunny Sunday. With a tune to 580 hp and a short-shifter, you can turn any drive into an extreme experience whenever you want. Yet you can certainly drive a Turbo in a quiet, cruising and normal way as well.
About the seller
On behalf of Martijn, we are allowed to auction this special 997 Turbo.
Martijn writes about ownership: ''once you want to have had a 911, do it right the first time''.
The combination of Turbo with manual transmission was decisive for buying the Porsche at the time in 2018. Upon purchasing the 911, Martijn brought the 997 to Beek Auto Racing. Here the Porsche has been on the roller bench to confirm that everything is in top condition.
