Porsche Carrera 3.0 (1976) - Estimate € 95000,- to € 110,000,-.
Only 2 years was this icon built as the successor to the 2.7 Carrera which in turn was the successor to the famous Carrera 2.7 RS. Although the Porsche Carrera 3.0, with 200hp, had 10hp less than the 2.7 Carrera, the power was available earlier and therefore the performance here too was nothing short of amazing!
The Carrera 3.0 brings together elements of two of the most legendary Porsches ever made. The design is an incarnation of the classic 1972 2.7-liter RS while the 2994cc cast aluminum block is the same one used in its faster cousin, the simultaneously introduced turbocharged Porsche 930.
This icon was built in 1976 and 1977 jointly with two other models in the 911 series, the standard 911 and the 930/911 Turbo. Only 3687 Carrera 3.0 were built. A very small number when compared to nearly 60,000 911 SCs and nearly 80,000 911 Carrera 3.2 models. Of the Carrera 3.0, 2564 coupes and 1123 Targa versions rolled out of the factory. About 60% were left-hand drive.
The name "Carrera" (Race in Spanish) was the famous version that Porsche stuck exclusively on some models because of its successes in the Carrera Panamericana races.
The Carrera 3.0 engine is as a base the same engine that was what was used in the 930/911 Turbo but without the turbocharger. The engine has 200 hp at 255 Nm of torque at 4200 rpm. Remarkably, the engine features the flywheel and crankshaft of the legendary 1974 Carrera RS (and later 1974 G- Carrera). This Carrera 3.0 engine would eventually remain the basis for all subsequent 911 models through 1989 such as the 911SC and the Carrera 3.2.
The Carrera 3.0 appears to be a somewhat slower version of the original 2.7 RS and 2.7 Carrera's but appearances can be deceiving. Performance is hardly inferior to the 1973 Carrera RS. The Carrera 3.0 accelerates just as fast from 0-100 km/h. The 3 liter engine even delivers much more torque so that, in top gear, accelerates 3 seconds faster from 40 - 160 km/h than its production predecessors.
The Carrera 3.0 offered here came with the rare Sportomatic gearbox. A PDK avant la lettre shall we say. The name Sportomatic was not given for nothing, because this semi-automatic is surprisingly sporty to drive. During the extensive nut and bolt restoration that this car has undergone, the Sportomatic was replaced by a 5-speed manual transmission in order to offer just a little more experience and performance. Of course, the Sportomatic comes with the car.
As already indicated, this 3.0 was expertly restored several years ago by none other than Roy van Lier of Oss. All components were addressed, technically, as well as exterior and interior. The quality of the restoration was such that the car was sold through Porsche Classic center Gelderland to the current owner, who has kept the car in the same top condition. Of particular note is the Porsche Tartan upholstery with Scotch check on the Recaro sport seats.
In addition, the car has been subtly lowered which makes the original restored Fuchs rims (fitted with fresh Continental rubber in 2019) look extra good.
Of course, this originally German-delivered 3.0 is fully matching numbers (except for the now-mounted manual transmission).
A valuation report of 110,000.00 euros (2020) is available for inspection.
Our opinion
A real Porsche, that's how you can describe this Carrera 3.0. Faster than the later delivered SCs and lighter than the 3.2s that were delivered from 1983. In addition, only a small series built, so very stable in value and an unprecedented driving pleasure. The car offered here is in fantastic condition, has been perfectly maintained, last service in April 2023 at Porsche Classic Centrum Gelderland, and looks excellent.
