About this Collectable
Mercedes G-Class G36 Brabus
This is a VAT car!
Since its public debut in 1979, the Mercedes G-Class has a long history of loyal service and enduring appeal to car enthusiasts around the world. Designed as a utilitarian vehicle for off-road use, the G-Class has seen several luxurious and high-performance variants over the years, while still remaining true to its rugged origins.
The short G-Class was and remains a maverick and sold relatively little. Mercedes therefore decided to stop production and focus entirely on the 5-door versions. The effect of this was/is that prices of the short G-Class have risen dramatically over the past few years. Thanks to its short wheelbase, the 3-door G-Class is a very agile and practically usable car that is at home in town but also definitely in rough terrain.
Brabus, as a Mercedes Benz refinisher, has now established a good reputation. In 1977, Bodo Buschmann started the company Brabus together with his friend Klaus Brackmann, who incidentally was only part of the company for a short time. His first 3 letters were retained in the name! Until the early 2000s, the company was best known for its larger engines that were designed and built in-house based on existing Mercedes engine blocks. One of these was the 3.6-litre, based on the 300E engine. Not so much the power, but especially the torque impressed.
Brabus not only supplied new cars but also rebuilt existing models with various upgrades. Such was the case with the G36 offered here. In 1991, this G-Class was admitted as 300GE, the then top version in the G-Class series. Shortly afterwards, as usual, the car was converted to G36 at Brabus with the corresponding modifications such as exhaust, rims and interior. On registration plates, the car is from 1980 which is favourable for road tax! In 1994, the G36 was put on an old chassis in Norway because of tax advantages in that country, all very common at the time and completely legal. The G36 was therefore imported as such into the Netherlands and this has been extensively documented. As far as we know, only 3 of the short G36 were produced!
Our opinion
The last short G-Class is unique! It looks tough with its short wheelbase and is in all respects much easier to fit than its big 5-door brother and therefore a lot more "city-friendly". A short G36 Brabus is unique, as far as we know nowhere for sale at the moment and therefore very special. There are a number of famous G-Class collectors who both also have a short G36 in their collection.
About the seller
The owner is a true Mercedes "G" enthusiast and scours all of Europe for special G-Classes, in his career he has found many special G's that are also in museums or have ended up with collectors, now also this Short version of the 3.6 Brabus that he had never been able to buy or seen before! Well-known collectors like Marc Luca and Franco Lembo once had 1, these are two collectors also known for their exceptional stock in terms of rarity. As he likes to swap his stock for yet other unique examples, this G36 may be sold. He drove the G36 himself from Norway to the Netherlands without any problems and also found out that there is ample power, probably even more than Brabus put on paper!
